Netflix Smash Hit With 20 Million Weekly Views Faces Uncertain Future for Season 2

It’s possible that Netflix could be considering another season for their popular miniseries “The Perfect Couple,” as reported by Deadline. The streamer had initially planned a sequel inspired by Elin Hilderbrand’s upcoming 2024 novel, “Swan Song,” which is set on Nantucket.

Joanna Calo, recognized for her role as executive producer and co-showrunner on The Bear, was assigned as the scriptwriter and series manager for the new project.

According to reports from Deadline, it appears Calo has departed, with no replacement writer announced yet. As for a potential second season on Netflix, the streaming giant has not yet given any confirmation.

Swan Song unfolds the enigmatic tale of the Richardsons, a wealthy couple who acquire a luxurious $22 million summer residence and host extravagant soirees. They engage in playful banter with locals, display their affluence through two yachts, and leave an impression on everyone they encounter. However, when their house catches fire and their crucial employee vanishes, the entire island finds itself in a state of confusion.

In the initial run of “The Perfect Couple,” Jenna Lamia took on the roles of writer, executive producer, and showrunner. Actress Nicole Kidman appeared in the series and held the title of executive producer. Meanwhile, Susanne Bier was responsible for directing and producing the show as well.

If another season occurs, it’s likely that Kidman and Bier will come back on board as executive producers. They would join Gail Berman, Shawn Levy, Per Saari, and Hend Baghdady who are also expected to continue in their executive producer roles.

The initial season received a variety of opinions among critics. According to Rotten Tomatoes, it had an approval rating of 66% with an average score of 6.1 out of 10 from 73 reviews. In summary, the critics’ general sentiment was that while the show’s predictability detracted from its perfection, engaging performances and scenic backdrops made this coastal murder mystery a captivating watch.

Despite some divided opinions, The Perfect Couple proved to be extremely popular among viewers. Within a four-day span during the September 2-8 period, it climbed to become Netflix’s most-watched series, earning an impressive 20.3 million views. It maintained its top spot for another week, garnering 21.9 million more views between September 9-15. Although it slipped to second place the following week with 10.4 million views (September 16-22), its initial success is still noteworthy.

The show maintained its popularity, garnering an additional six million views during the week of September 23-29, followed by 3.8 million views in the next week (September 30 – October 6), placing fifth in viewership. During the week of October 7-13, it had 2.5 million views and ranked eighth.

Despite the promising figures, it seems Netflix is hesitant about making a decision on whether Swan Song will proceed, according to various reports. For now, lovers of The Perfect Couple find themselves in a holding pattern, waiting to learn if the series will continue.
