The reboot of Marvel’s X-Men is definitively progressing, as confirmed by Kevin Feige, with Jake Schreier set as the director for now, following Ryan Coogler’s recent revelations.
Schreier Tapped to Lead the Mutants
During a discussion at the “Fantastic Four: First Steps” roundtable interview, Feige shared with CB.com that Jake Schreier will be directing the X-Men project for us, and we consider ourselves incredibly fortunate.
As a movie enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that Feige subtly pointed towards an exciting direction for the upcoming “Thunderbolts” film, one that seems geared towards a younger demographic. His praise for Schreier’s character-driven work and his knack for resonating with young audiences suggests he is the ideal choice for this project.
According to Feige, the X-Men movie is expected to maintain its comic roots by primarily focusing on and featuring a young cast.
X-Men Script Development Has Begun
Feige affirmed that the script for the project is being worked on and praised Schreier as a highly intelligent individual and gifted director. He also mentioned that the reboot is still in its initial stages of development, and it’s slated to be part of Marvel’s plans following the “Secret Wars,” with an anticipated release date after the 2027 film titled “Avengers: Secret Wars.
“We’re beginning. It’s all starting now,” Feige said.
Michael Lesslie is crafting the script for the X-Men movie, known for penning ‘The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes’.
What Saga Will the New X-Men Follow?
Feige noted that Marvel is still deciding which comic saga to adapt for the big screen.
He remarked that there’s a wealth of untapped stories,” he said. “For the X-Men universe, there are countless tales nested within tales waiting to be explored… We’re focusing on what truly matters: presenting each character authentically for the very first time in our movie.
Fox Cast Returning in Avengers: Doomsday
In the upcoming reboot, a fresh team will be introduced, but don’t worry, some well-known characters from previous Avengers adventures are set to make a comeback in “Avengers: Doomsday” on December 18, 2026. These returning faces include:
- Patrick Stewart as Xavier
- Ian McKellen as Magneto
- Rebecca Romijn as Mystique
- James Marsden as Cyclops
- Alan Cumming as Nightcrawler
- Channing Tatum as Gambit
Marvel’s X-Men Future
Schreier’s employment comes after a statement that Marvel intends to gradually introduce X-Men characters following their rights acquisition in the 2019 Disney-Fox merger. Similar to the Fantastic Four and Avengers, it’s anticipated that Feige will develop X-Men into one of the cornerstone franchises for the MCU up until the 2030s, as part of the MCU’s “mutant era renaissance.
X-Men ’97 Season 2 is also in the works for Disney+.
