Stephen Colbert has declared that his tenure as host of The Late Show will conclude in May 2026, marking the end of this long-running late-night program that initially debuted with David Letterman in 1993. After a remarkable 33-year run, CBS is officially terminating the entirety of The Late Show franchise.
During a recording of his program, Colbert announced the news and subsequently uploaded a clip of it to Instagram on July 17. He informed the audience, “This isn’t merely the conclusion of our show, but the end of The Late Show on CBS. I’m not being replaced; instead, everything is simply disappearing.
Colbert thanks audience and crew in emotional message
Yesterday, the 61-year-old host found out about the decision just a day prior. Although it took him by surprise, he seized the opportunity to express his thanks to his fans and colleagues. “I want to thank you, my audience, for being with us,” Colbert stated. “I appreciate working alongside this band and these artists each night. And I must say, I am incredibly, profoundly grateful for the 200 people who work here.
Over the last 10 years, Colbert has spent each day working alongside his dedicated team on the show. He expressed a mix of joy and obligation as he shared their collective efforts with viewers, looking back on this period since 2015.
Using his characteristic wit, Stephen Colbert spoke about the upcoming months. “I can’t wait to continue working alongside my regular crew of ‘idiots’ for the next ten months,” he remarked. “It promises to be an enjoyable ride.
Here’s why CBS is ending The Late Show with Stephen Colbert
CBS officials George Cheeks, Amy Reisenbach, and David Stapf clarified their reasons for canceling the show despite its popularity. In a shared statement, they expressed that this move was strictly a financial decision amidst tough circumstances in late-night programming, unrelated to the show’s performance, content, or any issues occurring at Paramount.
Besides voicing their admiration and esteem towards Colbert and his team, they mentioned that their high regard for his skills complicated the choice even further. Moreover, they expressed eagerness to honor Colbert and revel in the show’s success alongside its legions of fans during the next ten months.
