7 Indie Games You Should Be Playing Right Now

Currently, you have a wealth of options for TV shows and films to enjoy, not to mention an abundance of games to keep you entertained.

Indie games have been extremely popular recently, and I often refer to them as the “charm” or “allure” of independent gaming. Despite having significantly less marketing and budgetary resources than triple-A games, some indie games still manage to captivate and engage players without needing all the flashy features of larger titles. This makes it easier for gamers to focus on what truly matters: the game itself.

It’s not about which studio made it, who’s voicing whom, nor who scored the soundtrack, but instead the core of the game. The beauty of indie games really lies in how there are no limits to what indie developers can create. Their imaginations and creative juices flow wildly, bringing worlds we’ve yet to see and refreshing characters to life with just a smidge of the budget of the Big Guys.

The developers’ intense love and commitment to their projects is palpable in every game they create, and there are numerous remarkable indie games worth exploring. However, I’d like to highlight a few particular titles that stand out. Each one offers the same level of entertainment as a big-budget game and therefore merits attention and playtime.

Here are 7 indie games that you’re probably sleeping on:

Hell Clock (2025)

Brazilian studio Rogue Snail absolutely nailed it with this title. Much like other Roguelikes and ARPGs, time is not your friend in Hell Clock. This very original game is based on one of the bloodiest civil conflicts in Brazilian history, the War of Canudos, while adding supernatural elements like the undead for an entertaining twist.

Hell Clock offers two different game modes for its variety of players. One mode allows the game to be experienced as it was meant to be: fast-paced, unforgiving, chaotic, challenging. The other game mode allows the gamer to take their time with the levels by not running a clock, which lets players finish the level they’re on without the constant fear of time running out and having to start all over again.

Hell Clock is currently available on Steam.

BOKURA: planet (2025)

The game BOKURA: planet by Tokoronyori presents a deceptively adorable exterior, but delivers intense emotional impact to players. It’s important to note that this game is designed exclusively for multiplayer, so you can’t play it alone. In this cooperative game, two players work together to solve puzzles and progress through the game. Communication is key, as the unique characters they control can only advance on this strange planet by collaborating verbally.

Prepare yourself for numerous emotional blows and thoughtful reflections – I’ll keep silent to avoid ruining the experience for you.

BOKURA: planet is available on Steam.

My Little Universe (2025)

As a game enthusiast, I’d highly recommend giving My Little Universe by Estoty a try if you’re seeking an engaging, family-friendly experience. This game is so immersive that hours can slip away unnoticed! You and your fellow players collaborate to build entire planets and progress through various technological eras while upgrading tools and weapons.

Mining for precious ore, chopping down trees for wood, and sailing across seas to discover new islands are just a few of the activities you’ll enjoy in this captivating world. You’ll also unlock stylish costumes and outfits, battle adversaries and monsters, and solve intriguing puzzles that will keep you enthralled as you leap from planet to planet. The fun is endless with this game!

You can find ‘My Little Universe’ on platforms such as Steam, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, and mobile devices.

Spirit City: Lo-fi Sessions (2023)

This is the kind of game to turn on and leave it playing all day. Mooncube Games’ Spirit City: Lo-fi Sessions is the mother of all cozy games.

Nestled with a low-fi music selection that would make any Spotify playlist feel inadequate, the game titled Spirit City offers both organization and comfort. Equipped with Pomodoro timers, personal journals, task lists, and habit trackers, this game ensures you remain productive and on top of your tasks while grooving to some fantastic tunes.

You’re able to personalize every aspect of your virtual apartment and character within the game. You also discover various assortments of actions and noises that summon tiny spirits, which you can collect. Though I can’t specify exactly how many hours I’ve spent on this game while multitasking, I can assure you it’s been a significant amount. What makes it worthwhile is the sense of achievement it gives me, making me feel like I’ve used my time constructively.

Spirit City: Lo-fi Sessions is available on Steam.

Storyteller (2023)

Who doesn’t love a good fairy tale?

Annapurna Interactive’s game named “Storyteller” empowers players to act as the narrative architects, allowing them to create visual storyboards that narrate each individual story title. The classic tale of an envious queen murdering a beautiful princess is just one example; the player must select appropriate characters and settings to depict key scenes accurately, ultimately unveiling the entire story line by line.

Some games offer various conclusions, enhancing enjoyment as players are encouraged to think creatively. I particularly appreciate how the game reacts when a scene or character is manipulated inappropriately. Unlike many other games, it doesn’t provide any clues about where certain items should be placed or with whom they belong. Instead, you’re solely reliant on your problem-solving abilities to figure things out.

Storyteller is available on the Nintendo Switch, PC, iOS, and Android.

Everdeep Aurora (2025)

In simpler terms, Everdeep Aurora by Nautilus Games can be thought of as the offspring of a memory game and a puzzle-solving game. It’s an engaging (albeit occasionally challenging) blend of these two genres, featuring adorable pixel art and an appealing narrative. In this game, you take on the role of a cat looking for her mother amidst a meteor shower. Your journey leads you to seek shelter in the Underground, where you encounter puzzles, drilling, exploration, and opportunities to assist non-player characters (NPCs) as you progress towards your goal.

The nostalgic feel is quite strong when encountering the retro-style graphics and ambiance of the game. Its adorable aesthetics resemble that of games like Undertale, yet it offers extended playtime. Furthermore, there are various endings within the game for players to uncover as they progress.

Everdeep Aurora is available on the Nintendo Switch and PC.
