7 Horrifying Creatures From Another Dimension: The 2020s Edition

Killers are scary no matter what, but if I ever found myself facing one, I’d much rather it be a human. I think I’d have a better chance against someone like Ghostface than against a monster from another world. I enjoy watching these creatures in horror movies and shows, but I definitely want them to stay fictional! Horror has always featured a wide range of aliens, demons, ghosts, and other supernatural beings.

Horror continues to thrive, and the 2020s have already delivered some truly frightening monsters and otherworldly beings. To acknowledge these new additions to the horror landscape, let’s explore six of the most terrifying creatures from other dimensions that have emerged in recent years.

Vecna (Stranger Things)

While *Stranger Things* always had suspenseful and creepy parts, it didn’t become truly terrifying until season four with the introduction of Henry/Vecna/One. This villain is unlike anything the show had done before. He began as a troubled child with powers who harmed his family, and later became a test subject controlled by a special device. But when Eleven sent him to another dimension, Vecna was fully formed. He’s a visually disturbing creature with a voice that sends chills down your spine, and he’s definitely someone you wouldn’t want haunting your dreams.

The Smile Entity (Smile and Smile 2)

The horror movie *Smile* features a truly terrifying villain: an unseen force that relentlessly torments its victims until they die, then moves on to haunt anyone who witnesses the death. It’s one of the best horror films of recent years, and its concept – turning a friendly smile into something frightening – is incredibly clever and disturbing.

Jean Jacket (Nope)

This otherworldly creature, disguised as a UFO, is delightfully terrifying – it eats anyone who looks at it! Known as Jean Jacket, this being wasn’t motivated by any grand plan or backstory; it simply *is* a predator, thriving on attention and greed to make a meal of curious onlookers. We adore this chaotic flying beast, and wish it well in its continued existence.

The Angel (Midnight Mass)

Who doesn’t love a mysterious, angelic creature? Midnight Mass is one of the best shows Netflix has ever made, and this Angel is surprisingly evil. The way it calls to people, draws them in, and then attacks is chillingly beautiful. The resulting chaos on Crockett Island is captivating and intense.

Shoggoths (Lovecraft Country)

Shoggoths have been around in Lovecraftian lore long before the HBO series *Lovecraft Country*, but the show’s portrayal really defined how these creatures were seen in the 2020s. They first appear in the very first episode, aggressively pursuing Tic, Leti, and Uncle George after a dangerous encounter in a racially segregated town. You definitely wouldn’t want to stumble upon one of these beasts in the woods! However, the show later reveals a shoggoth can also be a protector, saving Tic’s life and changing our perception of them.

Drowned Spirit Lady (Talk to Me)

I definitely don’t think it’s fun to try and contact spirits, especially not with something like an embalmed hand. And nobody should be doing that with their friends, particularly after seeing the movie *Talk to Me*. The ghost that possesses Mia is truly terrifying. Honestly, it’s almost as frightening as having friends who would encourage possession just to film it for entertainment. Seriously.

“The Well” Entity (Doctor Who)

This is a bit of a callback to an earlier episode, “Midnight,” which featured a similar creature. However, the being in this new adventure is more advanced and frightening. It hides just over a person’s shoulder and forces them to attack others. When someone is killed, the creature moves to the new victim, continuing the cycle of violence. The idea of something silently controlling you and turning you into a killer is deeply disturbing.
