As a lifelong movie fan, I’ve always been fascinated by celebrity relationships, and it’s clear finding ‘the one’ in Hollywood can be really tough when you’re both constantly in the public eye. I’ve noticed a lot of stars actually seem to do better when they date people outside of the industry – lawyers, builders, that sort of thing. It seems like having a partner who isn’t wrapped up in the glitz and glamour can bring a much-needed sense of normal life and stability. Here are a few examples of celebrities who found love with people completely removed from the world of entertainment.
Matt Damon

Matt Damon and Luciana Barroso first met when he walked into a Miami bar where she was working as a bartender. He was in town filming a movie and trying to avoid the press. They married in a small, private ceremony in 2005 and now have four daughters. Damon often says Barroso helps him stay normal and down-to-earth, even with his incredible fame.
George Clooney

Hollywood star George Clooney shocked fans when he married human rights lawyer Amal Alamuddin in 2014. Amal focuses on important international and human rights cases, intentionally staying away from the often shallow world of entertainment. Their glamorous wedding in Venice received huge media coverage around the globe. Today, they both maintain successful careers while raising their two children, twins Ella and Alexander.
Gal Gadot

Gal Gadot and her husband, Yaron Varsano, first met at an unusual party in the Israeli desert. Varsano was a real estate developer who later owned a high-end hotel in Tel Aviv. He sold his hotels to Roman Abramovich in 2015 for a significant amount of money. While they now collaborate on film and television projects, Varsano’s professional background is still primarily in business.
Lisa Kudrow

Lisa Kudrow and Michel Stern have been happily married since 1995. They first met when Michel was dating Lisa’s roommate, but they didn’t become a couple until reconnecting at a party years later. Michel prefers to stay out of the spotlight, and rarely makes public appearances with the ‘Friends’ star. Their enduring relationship is often seen as proof that privacy can help a marriage thrive.
Eddie Redmayne

Eddie Redmayne and Hannah Bagshawe got married in a beautiful winter wedding. They’d been friends since school in England and later fell in love. Hannah, a public relations executive, helps Eddie, the Academy Award-winning actor, stay organized and balanced, especially when he’s traveling for work. They have two children and value spending time with their family more than attending glamorous Hollywood events.
Vince Vaughn

Actor Vince Vaughn married Kyla Weber, a Canadian real estate agent, after being introduced by a friend at a wedding. He was struck by her down-to-earth personality. They wed in a private ceremony in 2010 and have two children, whom they largely keep out of the public eye to give them a normal childhood.
Jon Bon Jovi

Jon Bon Jovi and his wife, Dorothea Hurley, have been married since 1989. They were high school sweethearts and secretly eloped to Las Vegas while Jon was on tour. Dorothea has chosen a life outside the spotlight, working as a karate instructor and owning a restaurant. Their long and successful marriage is built on a foundation of strong communication and a commitment to family, making sure to have dinner together even with Jon’s busy touring schedule.
Jeff Bridges

Jeff Bridges and Susan Geston first met at a Montana dude ranch where Geston was working as a waitress. Bridges was filming the movie ‘Rancho Deluxe’ at the time and was immediately captivated by her. Though she initially declined his advances, they eventually fell in love and married in 1977. They’ve been together for almost fifty years and have three daughters.
Patrick Dempsey

Patrick Dempsey and Jillian Fink first connected when Dempsey booked an appointment at Fink’s hair salon. Fink, a well-known makeup artist and hairstylist, treats her husband just like any other client. After a short separation in 2015, they committed to rebuilding their relationship and making their marriage stronger. Now, they’re focused on raising their three children and working together on charitable projects.
Seth Meyers

Late Night host Seth Meyers married human rights lawyer Alexi Ashe in a glamorous wedding on Martha’s Vineyard. Ashe dedicates her career to helping people who have experienced gender-based violence and human trafficking. Meyers often jokes about their life at home during his show, creating a fun contrast with Ashe’s serious and important work.
Joseph Gordon-Levitt

Joseph Gordon-Levitt is very private about his personal life, and he and Tasha McCauley married in secret. McCauley is a robotics expert and co-founder of the technology company Fellow Robots, with an MBA and a passion for scientific advancement over celebrity life. They generally avoid public appearances to safeguard their children’s privacy.
Jennifer Lawrence

I was so happy to hear about Jennifer Lawrence finding someone special! She started dating Cooke Maroney, who’s an art gallery director, through a friend. He’s really involved in the New York art scene, working with a lot of up-and-coming artists. They had a beautiful wedding at this gorgeous old mansion in Rhode Island, with tons of famous faces there. From what I’ve read, she really appreciates that he’s so down-to-earth and isn’t caught up in the whole celebrity thing, which is great to hear.
Amy Schumer

Comedian Amy Schumer and chef Chris Fischer got married surprisingly quickly – just months after they began dating. Chris Fischer is a celebrated chef who manages his family’s farm on Martha’s Vineyard. He’s also a cookbook author, having won a James Beard Award for his book about sustainable food and life by the coast. Amy and Chris even appeared together on a cooking show, where they showcased their different approaches to cooking.
Dolly Parton

Dolly Parton has been happily married to Carl Dean since 1966. Dean, who owned an asphalt company in Nashville, prefers to stay out of the public eye. It’s said he’s only seen Dolly perform a few times throughout her incredibly successful career. Their relationship works because they both value their independence and he treats her like an everyday person, not a superstar.
Jesse Tyler Ferguson

‘Modern Family’ actress Sarah Hyland married lawyer Justin Mikita in New York City. Mikita is a strong advocate for LGBTQ rights and previously worked to repeal Proposition 8 in California. Together, the couple started Tie The Knot, a tie company that donates its proceeds to organizations fighting for marriage equality. They successfully combine their lives in the spotlight with important activism and legal work.
Salma Hayek

Salma Hayek and French businessman François-Henri Pinault tied the knot in a beautiful wedding in Paris. Pinault is the CEO of Kering, a company that owns famous luxury brands such as Gucci and Saint Laurent. He focuses on the business side of fashion, rather than making movies. The couple balances their busy lives and careers by living between London and France.
Ed Sheeran

Ed Sheeran reconnected with his childhood friend, Cherry Seaborn, after many years. Cherry works as a consultant, specializing in risk management, and is a graduate of Duke University. She’s been a major inspiration for his music, including his popular song ‘Perfect’. They both prefer a peaceful, private life in the English countryside, away from the busy world of music.
Julianna Margulies

Julianna Margulies and her husband, Keith Lieberthal, met at a party she nearly didn’t attend. Keith, a Harvard Law graduate, is a highly successful lawyer. Julianna was pleasantly surprised that he didn’t seem to recognize her as a celebrity when they first met. They live in New York City, juggling her filming commitments with his demanding legal career.
Jerry Seinfeld

Jerry Seinfeld, the famous comedian, met Jessica Sklar at a gym not long after she returned from her honeymoon with someone else. Jessica is a public relations professional and a successful cookbook author. She also started Baby Buggy, a charity that helps families in need throughout New York City. Despite the unusual way they met, Jerry and Jessica have been happily married for over twenty years.
Christian Bale

Christian Bale and Sibi Blažić first connected when she was working as an assistant for Winona Ryder. Before that, Sibi worked as a model and makeup artist, but she generally stayed out of the public eye. The couple secretly married in Las Vegas in 2000 and have always valued their privacy. Bale frequently acknowledges her support in his award speeches, crediting her with providing stability amidst his demanding career.
Kevin Jonas

Kevin Jonas and Danielle Deleasa first met while he was on vacation with his family in the Bahamas. Danielle was a hairdresser then and didn’t recognize the Jonas Brothers. Their relationship and first years of marriage were featured on the reality TV show ‘Married to Jonas’. The couple decided to move to New Jersey to raise their two daughters, preferring a life outside of Los Angeles.
Ken Jeong

Ken Jeong and his wife, Tran Ho, were both doctors in California when they first met. While Ken became well-known as a comedian, Tran continued to work as a family doctor. She actually gave him the encouragement he needed to fully focus on acting after he started feeling exhausted from his medical career. They frequently share funny stories about their time working in the medical field when they’re interviewed.
Paul Rudd

Paul Rudd and Julie Yaeger first met when he arrived in New York, at his publicist’s office. Julie was a publicist herself at the time, but later became a screenwriter. She wrote the screenplay for ‘Fun Mom Dinner,’ a film Paul helped produce. The couple married in 2003 and now enjoy a peaceful life in upstate New York.
Zoe Saldaña

Zoe Saldana and Italian artist Marco Perego fell in love quickly and married within months of meeting. Marco, a former soccer player, became an artist after an injury. Interestingly, he took Zoe’s last name when they secretly wed in London. Together, they’re raising their three sons in a home where they embrace multiple languages, art, and movies.
Wanda Sykes

Wanda Sykes and her wife, Alex Niedbalski, first connected on a ferry to Fire Island. Alex, who is from France and sells granite countertops, caught Wanda’s eye with her computer bag, which led to a conversation about home renovations. They tied the knot in 2008 and now live between Los Angeles and Philadelphia with their twins.
