It’s well-known that actors sometimes turn down big roles, but it’s especially striking when they choose artistic principles over a lot of money. These actors valued a good script and staying true to themselves more than guaranteed income or the chance to be in a popular series. By refusing roles that felt stereotypical or went against their beliefs, they often changed their careers – and even the film industry. Here are some actors who stuck to their guns when presented with scripts they didn’t believe in.
Dave Chappelle

Dave Chappelle made headlines when he turned down a $50 million deal to continue ‘Chappelle’s Show’ while it was incredibly popular. He felt that the show’s sketches, particularly in the third season, were starting to unintentionally promote the same harmful racial stereotypes they were meant to make fun of. A turning point came while filming a sketch with a pixie, when he noticed the audience and crew weren’t understanding the satire. He immediately quit the show and went to South Africa to rethink his career. His decision to prioritize his principles over a huge sum of money is remembered as a pivotal moment in entertainment.
Will Smith

Quentin Tarantino initially wanted Will Smith to star in his hit movie ‘Django Unchained’. However, Smith decided against taking the role after reviewing the script. He felt the story focused more on Christoph Waltz’s character, Dr. King Schultz, giving him the crucial final scene of defeating the villain – a moment Smith believed should have belonged to Django. Smith also envisioned the film as a romance, while Tarantino leaned towards a revenge story, and these differing creative visions ultimately led Smith to decline the part.
Chris Tucker

Following the huge success of the first ‘Friday’ movie, Chris Tucker was offered between $10 and $12 million to return as Smokey in ‘Next Friday’. However, he turned down the offer due to his religious beliefs and a wish to avoid content focused on drug use. He didn’t want to portray marijuana use to his fans, even though the character was popular. Ultimately, this decision didn’t harm his career – he later earned $25 million for ‘Rush Hour 3’, demonstrating his continued value as an actor.
Denzel Washington

At the beginning of his career, Denzel Washington was considered for the role of Detective David Mills in the thriller ‘Se7en’. He ultimately declined the part because he felt the script was excessively dark and disturbing. Brad Pitt then took on the role, and the film became a hugely popular and iconic movie of the 1990s. Washington later said he wished he’d made a different choice after seeing the finished film, but he was put off by how violent and unsettling the script was at the time.
Eddie Murphy

Eddie Murphy was originally planned to be in the first ‘Ghostbusters’ movie as Winston Zeddemore, and the part was meant to be significant. However, he chose to star in ‘Beverly Hills Cop’ instead, a decision that proved hugely successful for his career. Although ‘Ghostbusters’ became a major franchise, Murphy believed ‘Beverly Hills Cop’ would give him a better opportunity to shine as the lead, and his character, Axel Foley, became a classic.
Laurence Fishburne

Laurence Fishburne was originally offered the role of Jules Winnfield in ‘Pulp Fiction’ before Samuel L. Jackson. However, Fishburne turned it down because he didn’t like how the script portrayed heroin use, feeling it glamorized drugs. He worried about the impact the film’s depiction of drug culture could have, particularly on the Black community. This decision ultimately allowed Samuel L. Jackson to take the part, leading to his critically acclaimed performance and breakthrough success.
Terrence Howard

As a big ‘Iron Man’ fan, I always found it a little sad what happened with Terrence Howard. He was actually the highest-paid actor in the first movie, which is amazing! But apparently, things fell apart when it came time for the sequel. He and the studio clashed over the script and how much he’d be paid. They drastically cut down his role and offered him way less money to come back as Rhodey. He felt like they hadn’t kept their promise, so he refused to take the pay cut or the smaller part. That’s how Don Cheadle ended up taking over the role, and he did a great job, but it’s still a bit of a shame how it all went down with Terrence.
Ice Cube

Ice Cube turned down a $9 million role in the movie ‘Oh Hell No’ because he didn’t agree with the production’s requirements. Although he wouldn’t have received the full $20 million immediately, the film had the potential to become a successful series, earning him much more money in the future. Cube was unwilling to follow the studio’s rules regarding health and safety, and his decision stopped filming until they could find another actor to star alongside Jack Black.
Wesley Snipes

Terrence Howard ultimately played Lucious Lyon in the popular TV show ‘Empire’, but Wesley Snipes was originally offered the part. Snipes decided against it because the script and where it would be filmed didn’t fit his life and what he was looking for creatively. ‘Empire’ became a huge success, earning its stars a lot of money through reruns and their salaries. Snipes opted to pursue other movie roles instead of being part of the show’s success.
Kevin Hart

Kevin Hart turned down a role in ‘Tropic Thunder’ because he thought the character was overly exaggerated and didn’t fit his comedic style. He was worried the character’s language and behavior would harm his public image, so he decided to wait for projects where he had more say in how his comedy was presented. Brandon T. Jackson ended up playing the part.
Richard Pryor

Richard Pryor was initially going to star in ’48 Hrs.’ with Nick Nolte, but he wasn’t happy with the script. He wanted the character to be more developed and have more control over the story, but the studio wouldn’t make those changes. When Pryor left the project, it opened the door for Eddie Murphy, who landed the role and quickly became a major movie star.
Ray Fisher

Ray Fisher ultimately left his role as Cyborg in the DC Extended Universe, giving up potential earnings from future movies and a cameo in ‘The Flash.’ This decision followed a public disagreement with the studio stemming from changes made to the script and how people were treated during reshoots of ‘Justice League.’ Fisher felt the revised script and the new director’s behavior were disrespectful to both the character and the cast. He made it clear he wouldn’t reprise the role unless the studio took responsibility for its actions and respected the creative process.
Tupac Shakur

Tupac Shakur was originally cast in ‘Menace II Society,’ but he was fired after a disagreement with the directors. He felt his character wasn’t well-developed – that the script didn’t explain why he was violent, instead just showing him as a criminal. Tupac pushed for a more complex and realistic portrayal, wanting to explore the character’s motivations, but this led to him being removed from the film, which later became a classic of the genre.
Idris Elba

Idris Elba has repeatedly said he’s not interested in playing James Bond, even though many fans have wanted him for the role for years. He was bothered that discussions about him becoming Bond always focused on his race instead of his talent or the quality of the story. Ultimately, the intense attention and the way he was referred to as the “Black Bond” made the role undesirable, leading him to step away from a very lucrative opportunity. Elba has instead focused on creating his own iconic characters, like Luther, where he has more control over the creative process.
