Sometimes, it seems as though heroes are tasked with rescuing the situation, but some create more turmoil than the antagonists they confront. These leading characters, due to their actions or imperfections, frequently ignite chaos that eclipses the villains‘ plans, and yet we remain enthralled by their narratives because of their intricate journeys.
I’ve selected ten principal characters from anime, series, and films who often bring more chaos than their adversaries. Their motives, whether guided by noble intentions or hasty blunders, spark consequences that echo beyond the villains’ schemes, making them compelling, complex protagonists.
This version maintains the original meaning and tone while using slightly different word choices to ensure a natural and easy-to-read flow of language.
Tony Stark – Iron Man (2008)
In the movie ‘Iron Man,’ Tony Stark, portrayed by Robert Downey Jr., constructs his armor to combat evil, but his overconfidence stirs up turmoil. The development of Ultron results in widespread devastation that surpasses many villains’ plans, and frequently, his technology ends up in the wrong hands.
Regardless, it is Tony’s determination to safeguard the planet that ultimately justifies him. His readiness to give up his own life and acknowledge his errors transforms him into a hero, despite the fact that his brilliance often causes more complications than the adversaries he battles.
Eren Yeager – Attack on Titan (2013-2023)
In the anime ‘Attack on Titan,’ Eren, who is voiced by Yuki Kaji, initially appears as a hero, battling Titans. However, his actions eventually transform him into a global menace. The catastrophic event he initiates, known as the Rumbling, surpasses in destruction any damage inflicted by Marley or other adversaries on entire nations.
Eren’s captivating character is rooted in his strong desire for liberty and safety, which adds depth to his narrative. His powerful determination transforms his personal struggles into epic events that shape the world around him, making him a tragic yet heroic figure.
Walter White – Breaking Bad (2008-2013)
In the TV series ‘Breaking Bad,’ Walter, played by Bryan Cranston, transforms from a high school chemistry teacher into a ruthless drug lord. Initially doing so to support his family, his actions lead to widespread destruction, affecting both allies and innocent people, causing chaos that outshines any other dealer’s destructive impact.
In my perspective, the path to my redemption is paved by my last efforts to establish a prosperous future for my loved ones. My extraordinary intelligence, coupled with my journey through darkness, transforms me into a hero whose struggles overshadow even the most heinous deeds of the villains.
Shinji Ikari – Neon Genesis Evangelion (1995-1996)
As a devoted movie enthusiast, I find myself in the shoes of Shinji – a character from ‘Neon Genesis Evangelion,’ voiced by Megumi Ogata. In this role, I pilot an Eva with the responsibility to safeguard humanity. Yet, my indecisiveness often leads to turmoil and chaos. My emotional upheavals seem to trigger calamitous incidents, even more devastating than the attacks of any Angel we face.
Through his journey towards taking responsibility, Shinji ultimately emerges as a hero, even amidst the significant challenges that stem from his initial hesitation.
Rick Sanchez – Rick and Morty (2013-present)
Rick, portrayed by Justin Roiland in ‘Rick and Morty,’ is a brilliant scientist with a knack for chaos across the cosmos. His escapades have resulted in the destruction of entire planets, tearing apart dimensions, and even surpassing the devastation wrought by extraterrestrial threats, largely due to his uncontrollable experiments.
1) His deep affection for his family keeps him steadfast as a heroic figure. The occasional brilliance and tender-heartedness displayed by Rick captivates us, despite his unpredictable nature often eclipsing the schemes of even the most formidable antagonists.
Light Yagami – Death Note (2006-2007)
In the series ‘Death Note’, it’s Mamoru Miyano who lends his voice to the character Light. Using the Death Note, he sets out to eliminate criminals with the ultimate goal of constructing an ideal world. However, these actions lead to a widespread panic and numerous deaths that exceed those caused by other ‘Kira’ users or investigators.
His unfortunate downfall, fueled by a distorted notion of fairness, continues to captivate us. His intellect and ethical journey elevate him to the status of a hero whose challenges surpass those of any antagonist.
Despite his misfortune stemming from a warped sense of justice, he remains intriguing. His intelligence and moral development make him an extraordinary hero battling struggles that even villains can’t match.
Anakin Skywalker – Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith (2005)
As a passionate film enthusiast, I can’t help but reflect on the captivating transformation of Anakin, skillfully portrayed by Hayden Christensen in ‘Revenge of the Sith.’ Initially, Anakin was destined to be a Jedi, maintaining balance within the galaxy. However, his descent into darkness, culminating in his metamorphosis into Darth Vader, set off a chain reaction that empowered the Empire and instigated a level of suffering across the cosmos, surpassing even the initial machinations of Palpatine.
Through his son, Luke, Anakin’s redemption is achieved, making for a captivating narrative, even with the destruction he leaves in his wake during his transformation from hero to villain.
Guts – Berserk (1997-1998)
In the series ‘Berserk’, the character Guts, voiced by Nobutoshi Canna, battles to endure a ruthless existence. However, this character bears a cursed mark which summons demons that indiscriminately kill multitudes of innocent people. His relentless pursuit of vengeance leads to devastation far surpassing the destruction usually brought about by apostles.
My resolute dedication to shield Casca embodies my heroic spirit. Despite often causing more turmoil than the scheming of villains, it’s this unyielding determination that truly defines Guts as a hero.
Naruto Uzumaki – Naruto (2002-2007)
In the animated series ‘Naruto,’ voiced by Junko Takeuchi, Naruto’s primary goal is to safeguard his village. However, his impulsive behavior frequently intensifies disputes. The unchecked power of the Nine-Tails within him often leads to devastation, at times surpassing the level of damage planned by the Akatsuki.
His love for others and his connections serve as his redemption. Despite the turmoil caused by his hasty nature, Naruto’s transformation into a unifying leader earns him the title of hero due to his ability to bring people together.
Peter Parker – Spider-Man 3 (2007)
In the movie ‘Spider-Man 3,’ Peter, portrayed by Tobey Maguire, engages in battles against villains. However, when he’s under the influence of the symbiote, he becomes a destructive force rather than a hero. As Venom-Spider-Man, his actions unintentionally lead to harm for his loved ones and the city, causing more damage than what Sandman or Harry’s plans could ever inflict.
By finding his way back to his ethical foundation, Peter emerges as a hero due to his persistent efforts to act righteously, even amidst the chaos and turmoil he creates.
