HoYoverse games consistently feature amazing music, but their graphics don’t usually get as much attention. Because these games are designed to run on many different devices, their anime-inspired visuals can’t quite compete with games built for powerful computers and consoles. However, Zenless Zone Zero really stands out when it comes to animation. The combat in this action RPG is incredibly smooth, fluid, and visually striking, blending beautiful design with practical gameplay.
The game is known for its quick and exciting battles, which often leave little time to enjoy the beautiful scenery. However, a recent photography event changes that, allowing you to pause the action during combat to capture stunning pictures and appreciate the visuals without worrying about being attacked.
The game’s action sequences really showcase how well-designed ZZZ is. From the gritty, decaying environments filled with unusual plants and minerals, to the unsettlingly human-like appearance of the Ethereals, and even fighting rogue construction robots, everything blends perfectly with the fantastic character art and smooth animations.
Each character fights with a unique style and flair. For example, Alice is usually portrayed as a sweet, easily frightened, and very particular young woman. But when she’s fighting, you see a different side of her – a regal confidence and a dismissive attitude towards her opponents, as if they’re insignificant after she defeats them.

Burnice loves fire and magical energy, and that shows in her attacks. She fights with a huge smile while covering enemies in flames – a surprisingly dark touch considering she usually seems a bit ditzy.

Lucy, a rebellious teenager from a wealthy family, acts tough and uses her friends as distractions in battle, sending them forward while expecting them to protect her in return. She’s quick to attack, but forgets to return the favor when they need help.

Trigger is a fascinating character – a blind sniper, which is already unexpected. This contrast is further highlighted by her incredibly precise and efficient movements; every action she takes is perfectly calculated when she targets an enemy.

The developers occasionally add personal touches, and that’s perfectly fine. While Yidhari’s dramatic spinning of her warhammer might seem like a way to make her character more appealing, it also effectively conveys her light, almost ethereal state following a difficult experience.

Ultimately, a degree of attractiveness has always been central to the game’s style, alongside its city and post-apocalyptic themes, and removing it would fundamentally change the experience.
I still think ZZZ looks and feels fantastic, and I’m impressed by the developers’ dedication to even the smallest details. I really hope they add a permanent photo mode so we can fully enjoy and share all the amazing visuals and effects!
