The new movie Zootopia 2 has been a big hit in Japan, with its opening day numbers exceeding expectations and even surprising movie industry professionals.
The movie grossed over 410 million yen on its opening day, marking the biggest debut ever for a Western animated film in Japan. It also set a new record for Disney and Pixar animations in the country, with the highest first-day attendance ever reported.
This impressive first release outperformed the opening-day numbers of several blockbuster films in Japan, including Frozen II, Toy Story 4, and The Super Mario Bros. Movie.
The film is doing very well in Japan, continuing its strong performance around the world. By December 5th, it had made $188 million in the US and Canada, and another $485 million internationally, bringing its total worldwide earnings to $673 million.
Originally, Deadline Hollywood predicted the movie would earn around $125 million domestically and $270 million worldwide over the Thanksgiving weekend. However, it significantly exceeded those expectations, actually bringing in $158.8 million in the U.S. and Canada and a massive $560.3 million globally. This gave it the biggest worldwide opening ever for an animated movie and one of the largest openings for any film.
The movie earned $100.3 million in the U.S. and Canada over the three-day weekend. It did exceptionally well in China, bringing in over $271 million during its opening weekend. In fact, it was the first Hollywood movie to make over $100 million in a single day in China, achieving this on November 29th.
After strong demand in China and North America, Japan’s enthusiastic response to Zootopia 2 has made it one of the most successful animated movie releases in recent years.
