Zoe Saldaña Expresses Disappointment Over Lack of Recognition for CGI Performances: ‘Quite Deflating When…’

As a fervent admirer and supporter of Zoe Saldaña‘s acting prowess, I find myself deeply empathetic towards her plight. Her experiences echo the struggles of many talented artists who have given breathtaking performances behind layers of CGI, only to be overlooked by award bodies that cling stubbornly to outdated notions of what constitutes a ‘true’ performance.

Actress Zoe Saldaña expresses her frustration over the underappreciation of actors in roles heavily dependent on computer-generated imagery (CGI) during awards season. In a chat with The Independent, she shares her thoughts about the potential bias against such performers due to their reliance on visual effects.

It can be difficult to instigate change in traditional settings because old habits are deeply ingrained. I get that, and it’s not a source of frustration for me, but it can be disheartening when you pour all your effort into something only to be overlooked, trivialized, and entirely disregarded – even if losing or not being recognized isn’t such a big deal.

Saldaña, a strong contender for the 2025 Oscars due to her portrayal in Emilia Perez, is renowned for acting in films like Avatar, Star Trek, and Guardians of the Galaxy. Despite receiving praise for her performances in these science fiction productions, the actress has often been overlooked by organizations such as the Academy and other awarding bodies.

Her role as Neytiri in the Avatar series garnered significant acclaim, but despite the movies winning three Oscars for cinematography, art direction, and visual effects, no acting nomination was given to Saldaña, not even after director James Cameron advocated for her recognition.

Speaking about doubts over her acting in Avatar, Saldaña clarified that some people believed her performance was solely due to technical wizardry. “I can tell the distinction between that and what we actually did,” she pointed out.

Even without recognition, Saldaña expressed her thoughts on why she chooses the projects she does. “Ultimately, you need to ponder: What motivates me to do what I do? Is it for others’ approval, or because there’s nothing else I’d rather do?” For her, being part of filmmaking is more significant than any awards.
