Zero Day Ending Explained: What Choice Did George Mullen Make After Learning About Alex’s Involvement in the Attack?

Netflix’s latest political drama, Zero Day, has captivated viewers thanks to its compelling plot and Robert De Niro’s outstanding portrayal. The narrative centers around U.S. President George Mullen, who grapples with grief over his son’s passing while confronting a difficult decision in the series finale.

In terms of the storyline, it turns out that the president’s son, Nick, passed away due to a drug overdose. As Mullen grapples with his grief, his daughter Alex accuses him of being responsible for Nick’s death, arguing that he could have prevented it if he had paid closer attention to him instead.

While Mullen is taken aback by a startling disclosure, it’s revealed that his daughter played a role in the cyberattacks. As De Niro’s character delves into the attacks, he uncovers that Alex conspired with her wealthy partner, Robert Lynden, and tech magnate Monica Kidder to orchestrate the violence.

In this critical moment, I find myself facing a tough decision, much like the character Mitchell portrayed by Angela Bassett would advise. The path before me is clear: either prioritize the nation’s welfare and security, or disclose the truth about my daughter to the American people.

In the meantime, Mullen receives a startling disclosure – his daughter was among those responsible for the cyberattacks. As De Niro’s character delves into the attacks, he uncovers that Alex conspired with her wealthy suitor, Robert Lynden, and tech tycoon Monica Kidder to mastermind the violent incidents.

I find myself in a precarious position, facing two daunting options much like Angela Bassett’s character, Mitchell, would advise. The first is to safeguard our nation, and the second is to unveil a truth about his daughter that may shake the very foundations of America.

Regarding the series finale, Eric Newman shared: “The reality can be tough to uncover, and it’s a solitary path for an individual to declare ‘I’ll speak the truth’, when so few others are willing. And often, you won’t receive recognition for it. Instead, you might face consequences, but it remains significant. It continues to carry great importance.

Additionally, Lizzy Caplan and Matthew Modine, portraying Alex and Speaker Dreyer respectively in the show, were informed upfront about their characters being the antagonists. During an interview with Netflix’s Tudum, the showrunner mentioned: “I believe I hinted to them both during the casting phase, ‘By the way, you’re the villain, but no one will realize it until the end.’

All episodes of Zero Day are now available to stream on Netflix.
