As an ardent admirer of Zendaya‘s journey and resilience, I must say that her experiences during the filming of “Dune: Part Two” serve as a stark reminder of the challenges that come with pushing boundaries and stepping into unfamiliar territories. The heatstroke incident in Jordan, which she bravely navigated with grace, is a testament to her determination and the lengths she goes to bring her characters to life authentically.
What struck me most was her candid admission of learning the hard way about hydration on set. It’s a lesson we all can learn from – even if it means facing the embarrassment of calling our moms while lying on a bathroom floor! As she continues to conquer the cinematic universe, I hope Zendaya finds more adventures that test her limits and remind us all that even superheroes need to stay hydrated!
Joke: And who knows, maybe next time she’ll bring a camel along for the ride – just in case nature calls!
Zendaya had a nerve-wracking incident during the shooting of Dune: Part Two in the secluded desert region of Jordan. The scarcity of essential amenities, including restrooms, made it quite challenging. She described reaching a bathroom as a ‘long walk‘, typically lasting around 10 minutes due to her costumes. To avoid the hassle, she opted to limit her water intake.
This choice had unfortunate consequences. She remembered feeling unwell due to heat exhaustion as a result of not drinking enough water. In an interview with W Magazine, Zendaya shared, ‘I believed I was being clever, but it’s clearly not the case.’ Upon calling her mom while feeling sick, she understood that she needed to drink more water on set.
During an interview following her struggles with tennis in Challenger tournaments, it was during her stay in Jordan where Zendaya experienced the heatstroke.
And then you began filming Dune: Part Two; that must have been quite the transition.
It was fantastic to train with the team on the Challengers daily, and I found myself in top physical condition, a state I hadn’t experienced in a while. Working on Dune, the costumes were quite heavy and restrictive, leaving me quite sore during the first few weeks. However, walking through the sand every day helped tone my backside nicely, which was an unexpected bonus! I felt well-prepared for the role.
What country were you in?
While we were in Jordan, the heat was intense and I recall thinking, “Oh dear, those restrooms are quite distant,” due to the hiking required to reach our filming locations. With the need to quickly exit our costumes if nature called, a trip to the bathroom would take at least 10 minutes. In truth, on set, I was apprehensive about drinking too much water due to my fear of either accidentally wetting myself or having an accident in the suit.
One time, I failed to hydrate adequately and suffered from heat exhaustion. I felt quite queasy. I recall phoning my mom while lying on the bathroom floor, expressing, “I don’t feel well.” She asked if I had consumed any water that day. I replied in the negative. I thought I was being clever, but it turns out you can’t play smart with hydration. So, I learned a valuable lesson.

In 2021 sequel fashion, Denis Villeneuve’s rendition of Dune will once more breathe life into Frank Herbert’s tale. Villeneuve’s interpretation has already made quite an impact, earning six Oscars for the first film and generating global box office earnings exceeding $1.1 billion.
Apart from the movies, the Dune universe has grown with the prequel series titled “Dune: Prophecy,” which airs on Sundays on HBO and can be streamed on Max. Denis Villeneuve also told Deadline that preparations for a third installment, based on “Dune Messiah,” are in progress, with filming set to begin sometime between 2025 and 2026.
