Zara Larsson Reveals Career Setbacks After Speaking Out for Palestine

In a new documentary called ‘Up Close’ on Amazon Prime Video, Swedish singer Zara Larsson discusses the difficulties she’s experienced after publicly sharing her political opinions. The film follows her journey from a young, rising star to a globally recognized pop artist, and she talks about the stress of fame, being in the public eye, and trying to stay true to her values while building her career.

The documentary reveals that singer Loreen Larsson lost opportunities, including performances and awards show invitations, due to her public support for Palestine. She recently confirmed she turned down a chance to perform at the 2024 Eurovision Song Contest in Malmö about three weeks ago.

Gästen told Sweden’s Sveriges Radio on the P4 Extra program that she made her decision because she had ethical concerns about Israel’s involvement.

Larsson explained that despite the massive audience – over 100 million viewers – she didn’t feel comfortable representing Israel at the competition. She said it just didn’t feel right to her at the time. She firmly stands by her decision and wouldn’t change it, stating she has no regrets and simply didn’t want to participate because it didn’t align with her feelings.

Her position aligned with a growing protest in Sweden. More than 1,000 Swedish musicians, including the popular artist Robyn, signed a letter published in the Aftonbladet newspaper urging organizers to exclude Israel from the Eurovision Song Contest. The musicians criticized the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), accusing them of having a “clear double standard” by allowing Israel to compete while banning Russia in 2022.

However, the EBU insisted that Eurovision should remain apolitical, emphasizing it’s a competition between broadcasters, not governments.

Larsson’s documentary explores the difficulties artists encounter when trying to stay true to their values while also pursuing their careers. Through her own experiences, she shows audiences what can happen when someone prioritizes their beliefs in the entertainment world.
