Zack Snyder shared a behind-the-scenes Polaroid of Ben Affleck in the Batsuit as they were getting ready to film Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
Snyder posted the photo with the caption, “First time in the suit. Everything I hoped it would be.” The picture is particularly meaningful for fans who have followed Ben Affleck’s journey as Batman.
Ben Affleck first played Batman in Batman v Superman, then had a quick cameo in Suicide Squad. He later took on the role again in the 2017 film Justice League. Although fans generally liked his portrayal of the character, the making of Justice League was reportedly difficult.
After Snyder’s daughter passed away, he had to leave the film, and Joss Whedon took over to complete it. It was later revealed that there were disagreements about the creative direction and some friction on set during production.
Ben Affleck has spoken about how difficult making the Justice League movie was for him, coinciding with personal struggles, including battling addiction. Critics observed that he seemed unhappy during that time; Todd McCarthy from The Hollywood Reporter even noted that Affleck “looked like he’d rather be almost anywhere else.”
Following the release of Justice League, Ben Affleck decided to stop directing and acting in The Batman. He explained he struggled to develop the story and lost his passion for it. This period also coincided with his renewed focus on recovery after a setback in 2017.
