ZachXBT: Scammer Stole Over $6.5 Million by Impersonating Coinbase Support

As a seasoned analyst with years of experience in the digital asset industry, I find it disheartening yet unsurprising to see such elaborate scams continuing to plague our community. The Ronald Spektor case is a stark reminder that cybercriminals are always one step ahead, constantly evolving their tactics to deceive unsuspecting victims.

Based on recent findings by cryptocurrency detective ZachXBT, it appears that the cybercriminal Ronald Spektor falsely represented himself as a Coinbase support agent within a phishing scheme. In October, this deception led to the theft of at least $6.5 million.

As a crypto investor, I’ve been left in the dark about Spektor’s whereabouts. The stolen funds, representing more than half of what was taken, have yet to be recovered. Alongside the missing funds, his associates and other affected parties remain elusive.

A Scammer Impersonating Coinbase

An inquiry led by crypto detective ZachXBT has recently unearthed a significant phishing scheme that swindled at least $6.5 million during the past month. The perpetrator, Ronald Spektor, was found to have posed as Coinbase customer support to ensnare victims. A victim who lost this substantial amount of money alerted ZachXBT, prompting him to delve into on-chain data for further investigation.

Despite a general decrease in crypto thefts, advanced phishing schemes are becoming more intricate. Spektor’s actions fit this pattern given the significant damage and stringent security precautions involved. Notably, he managed to conceal some aspects of his activities prior to Zach revealing the investigation.

Ronald’s personal information has been disclosed in several data leaks, and it appears to be connected to other breaches where his full name is implicated. Unfortunately, the story doesn’t have a positive resolution, as the identity of Ronald’s potential associates remains unknown. ZachXBT stated that while $3.1 million of the $6.5 million stolen was shown in the Ledger screenshots, it’s unclear who might be responsible for the remaining amount.

In an attempt to conceal his actions, Spektor erased several social media profiles that contained damning evidence against him. Despite many scammers abandoning the TON system, Spektor was regularly active on Telegram. The Telegram account linked to his profile was utilized for money laundering with a TON address. Regrettably, both his Telegram and X accounts have since been closed down.

It seems that the con artist utilized this digital wallet to carry out numerous Coinbase transactions, suggesting a potential number of other unsuspecting victims. Sadly, it appears that Spektor’s track has become elusive. Regrettably, ZachXBT hasn’t disclosed any details about his investigative leads regarding the missing funds or Spektor’s accomplices who remain at large.

Regardless, the disclosed probe could potentially uncover fresh details. Recently, the CEO and entire core team of OpSec stepped down following an investigation by ZachXBT. Zach discovered several unusual actions from the company owner, which supported employees’ doubts. These employees spoke up weeks after Zach made his discoveries public.
