Zach Galligan, known for his roles in the initial Gremlins films, recently announced some thrilling updates regarding Gremlins 3. As per him, the screenplay has been completed, and Warner Bros. appears keen on producing this movie. However, the production can’t move forward until Steven Spielberg has read the script and provides his approval for filming to commence.
Galligan shared exciting news in a TikTok video from @comicmoviedb. He mentioned that a script has been developed, and Warner Bros. is keen on moving forward with it. Reportedly, the project is pending Steven Spielberg’s review and revisions. The enthusiasm for this development stems from the success of Beetlejuice, as it seems to have played a crucial role in pushing the third film closer to reality after years of waiting.

The Gremlins series is known for its distinct blend of humor and terror. The initial film debuted in 1984 under the direction of Joe Dante, with a screenplay by Chris Columbus. Despite receiving criticism for certain violent moments, it turned out to be a massive success and played a role in establishing the PG-13 rating system. This success paved the way for a follow-up, Gremlins 2: The New Batch, released in 1990.
Now, it appears that the series is all set for its comeback. Previous updates indicated that Gremlins 3 has indeed entered the development phase. Warner Bros. seems to be keen on reintroducing beloved classics as part of a broader strategy to resurrect successful franchises – much like they’ve done with The Lord of the Rings, The Matrix, and The Goonies.
Information regarding the upcoming Gremlins film is limited. It’s unclear whether it will be a sequel, reboot, or something different entirely. However, the return of Chris Columbus suggests that it may maintain the same tone and aesthetic as the original films, which could delight longtime fans and draw in new audiences.
In 2016, Galligan noted that there was a potential third installment of Gremlins with Warner Bros., Columbus, and Spielberg on board. At that point, Carl Ellsworth was working on the script. Later in 2017, Columbus revealed he had penned a darker, more sinister storyline, raising doubts about Gizmo’s survival. As of 2020, it was confirmed they were considering using real puppets and animatronics for the gremlins instead of CGI, but whether this plan is still active remains unclear.
Warner Bros. is vigilant about safeguarding the Gremlins brand as well. In 2019, they obtained the rights to the franchise through trademark acquisition. That same year, WarnerMedia debuted an animated prequel series titled “Secrets of the Mogwai” on their streaming platform Max. This show has been popular and was renewed for a second season called “The Wild Batch,” which premiered in October 2024.
It seems that, as fans eagerly anticipate further updates, Gremlins 3 appears to be edging closer to materialization. The final significant hurdle is securing Steven Spielberg’s approval for the screenplay. As soon as this step is taken, production may commence swiftly.
