Prior to directing the hit 2022 film “Barbarian” and gaining significant recognition as a horror director in Hollywood, Zach Cregger, who was previously known for directing “Weapons”, had written a DC movie script called “Henchmen”.
Although the project hasn’t been presented to DC Studios yet, Cregger refers to this script as his most cherished work so far.
What Henchmen Is About
As reported by THR, the movie “Henchmen” centers around a minor criminal in Gotham City who unexpectedly becomes famous due to sheer luck after temporarily disabling Batman. The narrative includes occasional cameos of Batman, along with Harley Quinn and the Joker also being involved in the storyline.
Prior to the release of “Barbarian”, Cregger had penned a script that is now garnering attention on the web, sparking discussions among fans and experts about its possible connection to the DC Universe.
The story occurs within the DC Universe, but it’s an entirely new creation, distinct from typical superhero films. I penned this before writing ‘Barbarian’,” is how Cregger put it.

Where the Project Stands
Based on the information in the report, it appears that Cregger hasn’t presented the project Henchmen to DC Studios as of now. However, it’s noted that executives James Gunn and Peter Safran are cognizant of his enthusiasm for the film. The progress of this movie might encounter some hurdles.
- No current casting for Batman or Joker in the Gunn-Safran DC Universe.
- Harley Quinn’s role could theoretically go to Margot Robbie, but that is considered unlikely.
- Coordination with Matt Reeves’ films, as DC leadership will likely avoid overlapping villains while Reeves develops The Batman Part II and possibly a third film.

Cregger’s Busy Schedule
Cregger’s schedule is already bursting at the seams. Currently, his newest horror movie titled “Weapons” is playing in cinemas (you can read our review here), boasting a 96% Rotten Tomatoes score and promising box office numbers. Next on his list, he will direct “Resident Evil” for Sony in Prague this autumn, followed by a clandestine sci-fi project.
Gunn and the DCU are also releasing their own horror film, Clayface.
Although the project titled Henchmen isn’t finalized yet, Cregger’s increasing influence might make the unusual Gotham tale more likely to materialize in the coming years.
