Zach Cregger Says RESIDENT EVIL Reboot Will Honor and Feel Like the Games

With Zach Cregger’s movie “Weapons” hitting the screens, the director is already gearing up for his next venture. He’s set to direct a reboot of the Resident Evil film series, which doesn’t yet have a title. The Resident Evil franchise has several movies, and a recent reboot took place in 2021 with “Welcome to Raccoon City”. However, this upcoming Resident Evil reboot, produced by Sony Pictures and helmed by Cregger, intends to pay tribute to the video games in unique ways to narrate an epic tale.

Cregger shared with Comicbook.com that he has played every game in its entirety. He confessed to replaying ‘Resident Evil 4’ over a hundred times, being completely captivated by it. Therefore, his aim is to craft a narrative that pays tribute to the immersive feeling you get when playing these games.

Cregger openly acknowledges that he’s never watched any of the series’ movies as they don’t appeal to him personally. Yet, his enthusiasm for the video games serves as an inspiring ground to develop a narrative that, according to him, is going to be “truly spectacular.

In a previous gathering at CinemaCon, he discussed the reboot of the “Resident Evil” series, highlighting key features from the games that will be evident in this movie. He described a particular scene reminiscent of every “Resident Evil” game where the character is standing at the entrance of a dark tunnel with only one bullet left in their gun. He explained, “You know that something terrifying lies ahead in that darkness, that moment of sheer willpower when you have to force yourself forward. That’s a signature element that every ‘Resident Evil’ game has mastered and kept players like myself and countless others engaged with the series for years.

Zach Cregger’s reboot of the Resident Evil movie series is set to introduce its primary character, portrayed by Austin Abrams, and is scheduled for release in cinemas on September 18, 2026.
