As a Stephen King enthusiast who has spent countless hours immersed in his chilling tales since my youth, I must say that this year has been nothing short of a horror-filled delight! Among the many adaptations, one stands out as a hidden gem – “Lily”, an animated short based on King’s 1968 story “Here There Be Tygers.
Few authors are as renowned as Stephen King, who has excelled particularly in the horror genre. Over his career, he’s penned countless novels and tales, many of which have been turned into movies or TV shows. In fact, it seems like every year brings a new adaptation of one of Stephen King’s works, which is almost always the case.
Apart from his popular TV and stage productions, this year also introduced an animated short based on one of King’s earliest tales, which might have slipped your notice. However, we strongly recommend you don’t miss out on it!
In our report, we’re excited to introduce an animated short film that brings to life a long-forgotten tale penned by King in 1968, titled “Here There Be Tygers“. We found the innovative animation style and approach captivating, making us eager to share it with you. Continue reading for further details!
Year after year, Stephen King’s tales are brought to life on screen, and that trend continues in 2024. Already premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival is Mike Flanagan’s movie adaptation of King’s 2020 novella “The Life of Chuck”, set to arrive in cinemas shortly.
In another adaptation of a King novel, Gary Dauberman’s “Salem’s Lot” recently debuted as a streaming film on Max, but it faced criticism for its hurried and confused presentation. Simultaneously, the much-awaited “Dark Tower” series from Flanagan is being developed at this moment.
Yet, there’s one recent King project that seems to have flown under the radar. In October, Dark Corners Films released an animated short titled Lily. This short is part of a YouTube horror anthology series featuring stories from different genre filmmakers.
The short film is led by Kate Siegel, who is recognized for her performances in “Hush” and “Midnight Mass.” It reworks one of Stephen King’s earliest tales, titled “Here There Be Tygers,” which he penned in high school back in 1968. This story originally appeared in the Spring 1968 edition of Urbis magazine and can also be found in King’s compilation called “Skeleton Crew.
In “Here There Be Tygers,” young Charles, a third-grader, encounters a dreadful predicament. His teacher, Miss Bird, publicly embarrasses him when he asks for bathroom permission. As he enters the school restroom, he’s shocked to see a colossal tiger. To his dismay, one of his classmates, Kenny, vanishes inside, leaving Charles to confront the fearsome beast on his own.
In a refreshing twist, Siegel’s tale, called “Lily“, stands out, thanks in large part to Pete Scalzitti’s breathtaking animation. While certain elements like character names have been altered, the overall atmosphere remains as unsettling and dreamlike as Stephen King’s original narrative. This animated short is tailored for a younger demographic, providing a brief yet chilling glimpse into the disquieting aspects of childhood, especially under the shadow of indifferent adults.
Despite “Here There Be Tygers” primarily serving as a whimsical exploration of childlike imagination and fantasy, Lily’s character enriches the narrative. The captivating animation and symbolic imagery serve to heighten the intrigue surrounding the story’s unusual elements.
Hey there fellow gamer! If you’ve got some free time on your hands, I’d highly suggest giving Lily a spin. I’ve shared a link here, and trust me, it’s a gripping dive into the haunting realm of childhood fears. In this game, you’ll find yourself wandering through a peculiar world that kids often encounter, one filled with adults who may not always understand or empathize. It’s an intense yet captivating journey, perfect for those looking to immerse themselves in a unique narrative experience!
