As a YouTube TV subscriber, I’m really frustrated to find out that all the Disney channels are gone! YouTube and Disney couldn’t reach an agreement, so as of October 31st, YouTube dropped them. It’s a bummer, honestly.
YouTube TV users will lose access to channels like ABC, ESPN, Disney Channel, and Freeform, according to The Hollywood Reporter. This is especially significant with NFL and college football seasons happening now. While it’s uncertain if these Disney-owned channels will come back to YouTube TV, subscribers will receive a $20 monthly credit until the issue is resolved.
Both Disney and Google are publicly disputing a recent disagreement, and the situation has become quite tense. A Disney representative stated that Google’s YouTube TV is preventing its customers from accessing channels like ESPN and ABC because they wouldn’t agree to reasonable pricing. Without a new deal, YouTube TV subscribers will lose access to Disney’s sports programming, including major events from the NFL, NBA, and college football. Disney argues that Google, a massive company, is using its power to unfairly compete and disrupt standard industry practices. They acknowledge the frustration this causes for YouTube TV users and say they are trying to find a solution quickly.
Here’s what YouTube TV’s spokesperson said in response:
Disney recently threatened to remove its channels from YouTube TV as a way to get a better deal – one that would have meant higher prices for our customers. Now, they’re making good on that threat and have stopped providing their content on YouTube TV. This hurts our subscribers and seems designed to help their own competing live TV services, like Hulu + Live TV and Fubo.
Welp. We will see how this continues to play out among the entertainment giants.
