‘Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man’ Star Praises New Animated Series: “my biggest fear was that it was gonna be annoying and woke”

As a fellow film aficionado, I can’t help but appreciate the talent of Hudson Thames, who has made a significant mark by voicing everyone’s favorite wall-crawler, Peter Parker/Spider-Man, in Marvel’s enchanting animated ventures. For the first time, he donned the Spidey suit in ‘What If…?’ Season 1, gracing our screens in the episode where our friendly neighborhood Spider-Man battles through a harrowing zombie apocalypse.

In the upcoming animated series ‘Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man,’ due to premiere on January 29, Thames will be stepping back into the role of Peter Parker, or rather, Spider-Man. This is his second time donning the iconic character’s suit, bringing a new perspective to the classic hero. The series introduces characters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) not seen before, like Norman Osborn and Lonnie Lincoln.

Recently, Thames expressed thoughts about the upcoming show, and it turned out that the actor had a few concerns. Fortunately, these concerns didn’t materialize in the end.

Thames commended “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man,” finding it both well-crafted and relatable. He confessed his apprehension that it could come across as “grating and politically correct,” but thankfully, he discovered this wasn’t the case. As a brother to younger siblings, Thames felt the series accurately captured the high school experience. In summary, he was taken aback by how genuine and captivating the show turned out to be.

I found it incredible. To be honest, I worried it might be tedious and pretentious, but it wasn’t at all. Instead, it seemed genuine to me, which made me think, ‘Wow, this is excellent.’ Given that I’m the eldest of five brothers, I feel like I have a good understanding of their lives in high school. It truly captured those experiences accurately.

In the series, Colman Domingo plays Norman Osborn, a character who serves as Peter’s mentor, although his techniques are somewhat dubious. Meanwhile, Eugene Byrd, Grace Song, and Zeno Robinson lend their voices to portraying Peter’s classmates, including Lonnie Lincoln, Nico Minoru, and Harry Osborn.
