Georgia authorities have filed a request to revoke the probation of musician Jeffery Lamar Williams, also known as Young Thug, due to alleged violations of a court order. They argue that the artist’s social media activities were in breach of his released terms.
The proposed motion alleges that Williams shared content on a social media platform (previously known as Twitter) on date X, which could potentially endanger the safety of a key witness in his trial, Marissa Viverito from the Atlanta Police Department, and undermine the integrity of the judicial process. The content included a photograph of Ms. Viverito.
In simpler terms, the prosecutors argued that the post disrespected legal rules and potentially endangered Viverito. The court had previously ordered that Viverito should not be televised during a preliminary hearing concerning a gang murder case. They stated that Williams acted with flagrant indifference towards the law, the security of witnesses, and the fairness of the judicial process.
The document further notes a popular blogger, who faced allegations for violating a court order by publishing Viverito’s photograph on the internet. Prosecutors claim that Young Thug’s actions mirrored those of the blogger, leading to severe consequences. The filing includes evidence such as social media posts displaying Viverito’s address and her parents’ address as well.
In his own words, written on X, Williams stated, “I do not issue threats towards people. I consider myself a kind individual who would never endorse or engage in any act of threatening others. My beliefs revolve around promoting harmony and affection instead.
In a conversation with Variety, Young Thug’s attorney, Brian Steel, described the motion as groundless. He emphasized that bullying and coercion are always unacceptable, yet he firmly maintained that Williams had committed no wrongdoing and expressed optimism about securing a dismissal.
Steel communicated to the media outlet, “The foundation of this motion is unfounded. Although coercion and violent threats are always inappropriate, Jeffery Williams has committed no offense. We eagerly anticipate pursuing the dismissal of this petition.
In May 2022, Young Thug was among the 28 people initially detained during a major anti-gang operation carried out in Georgia.
