This often happens with younger actors who need a break, or see ‘retirement’ as a way to recharge creatively and personally. Here’s a look at several young male actors who publicly left acting, only to come back to the screen years later.

Shia LaBeouf

In January 2014, Shia LaBeouf announced on social media that he was stepping away from public life after being accused of plagiarism. However, he quickly continued working on significant film projects and art performances. That same year, he appeared in the highly praised war film ‘Fury,’ and in 2016, he starred in the independent movie ‘American Honey.’ Since then, LaBeouf has consistently worked as an actor, taking on leading roles in both independent and mainstream films.

Joaquin Phoenix

In 2008, Joaquin Phoenix surprised everyone by announcing he was leaving acting to become a hip-hop artist. It turned out this was all part of a cleverly planned performance art piece for the mockumentary ‘I’m Still Here,’ directed by Casey Affleck. After the project was released in 2010, Phoenix returned to acting with a role in ‘The Master’ and has since received widespread praise, culminating in an Academy Award win for his performance in ‘Joker’.

He stayed out of the public eye for almost ten years before returning to acting in the 2003 film ‘Party Monster.’ Since then, he’s chosen interesting and unique roles in shows like ‘American Horror Story: Double Feature’ and ‘The Righteous Gemstones.’ Today, he continues to be a familiar face in entertainment, both through acting and online projects.

Angus T. Jones

In 2012, the then-popular actor from ‘Two and a Half Men’ publicly asked fans to stop watching the show, explaining he was leaving to focus on his faith and education. This led to a several-year break from Hollywood, during which he studied at the University of Colorado Boulder. He briefly reappeared in 2015 for the final episode of ‘Two and a Half Men’, but his recent role in the 2023 comedy ‘Bookie’ signals a more committed return to acting, and a renewed collaboration with creator Chuck Lorre.
