The Deviants are a made-up race that belong to Marvel’s fictional world. Originating from the mind of Jack Kirby, they were introduced in the comic book “Eternals” issue 1, published in July 1976. Similar to humans or the Eternals, the Deviants stem from the same human lineage. They share a common origin with the Eternals, as both are products of an experiment performed by extraterrestrial beings known as the Celestials on Earth.

Descendants of humans, known as Deviants, were engineered by extraterrestrial beings called Celestials. They’re at odds with the Eternals, who embody everything that the Deviants aren’t. The Deviants refer to themselves as “the Changing People”. Each member of their kind has a unique genetic makeup, which frequently results in an unusual or grotesque appearance, and they possess extraordinary abilities. Some human legends are based on true Deviant tales.

The Deviants are a religious group who reverence the Dreaming Celestial, often known as “He Who Sleeps in Darkness.” According to their faith, he is responsible for their existence and the gift of Earth. However, this divine agreement was allegedly violated by the Eternals, as recounted in one of their sacred texts, the Book of Krask. While humans dwelt in caves, the Deviants progressed technologically, particularly in genetic engineering. Their rule over humanity was thwarted by the Eternals. Today, there are roughly 2,000 Deviants living on Earth.

15. Dulpus

Since Dulpus has made only four appearances in comic books since 2001, he is not widely recognized and there isn’t much information available about him. However, we do know that he attempted (and failed) to seize control of Earth with the aim of getting closer to Kang the Conqueror. He launched an invasion of China on Kang’s behalf but was unsuccessful after the Avengers intervened. In a subsequent encounter, he suffered a defeat at the hands of Warbird, which resulted in his complete withdrawal.

14. Ranar

Ranar was born to Brother Tode, the leader of a rogue Lemurian society, and an unidentified woman. His mother passed away during childbirth, under the supervision of Ghaur – a priest whose life was said to have been taken by Ranar himself, who is believed to have emerged from his mother’s womb prematurely.

There isn’t a great deal more information available about him beyond these details since he met an early demise, preventing us from delving deeper into his personality. However, given that he was the prince, one can infer that he possessed certain powers by inheritance.

13. Brother Visara

A Rebel ascended the throne following the departure of Warlord Kro. Leveraging the fear of the populace, he paid visits to the supporters of Ghaur and other priest-lords once it was revealed that the “era of sanctity” had been clandestinely utilized to gather a faction of disgruntled soldiers. He was notoriously recognized for his weapon, dubbed “The Slicer,” an execution device resembling a guillotine, which he used to behead suspected acolytes at the hands of priest lords, even extending to temple servants under his command. In the end, he met his demise due to the very success that had elevated him, as his detractors turned against him.

12. Brother Tode

For some time, multiple monarchies held power and clashed among themselves. However, as of late, only a single rogue empire, ruled by one individual, has been spotted on the radar. This solitary ruler is Brother Tode, known for his dominance within Toad City. Equipped with advanced tech, he effectively disposes of any threats to his territory, including aircraft or uninvited intruders.

In a grand setting, the imposing figure of Tode reigned from his throne, flanked by his loyal underlings such as Queen Vira, Broop the fool, Prime Minister Ragar, and Warlord Kro. These privileged subordinates either stood nearby or bowed before him. The Deviants would halt their tasks to show respect whenever Tode (or was being moved). Tode shared secrets with few, but he viewed Priest-Lord Ghaur as an ally; Ghaur claimed to have aided in the birth of Death’s son Ranar, who took his mother’s life during childbirth – not Queen Vira.

Tode might not possess traditional superpowers as a Deviant, but he boasts exceptional perception abilities among his kind. He is also an outstanding leader. His physical combat skills are somewhat lacking, but he has lightning-fast reflexes and can swiftly recover from injuries, sickness, and exhaustion at an unexpected pace. Moreover, Death has the ability to lift weights that are substantial for its size above its head.

Due to his exceptionally large size, Tode faces challenges in moving around independently and sometimes relies on assistance from others. He is capable of walking normally by himself when needed and can support his own weight for a while, but his agility and balance are not particularly strong.

11. Ulysses Dragonblood

Ulysses Dragonborn is classified as a deviant. Alongside his sibling Odysseus Indigo, he established the Damocles Foundation – an entity dedicated to shaping the future of human advancement. Ulysses had profound apprehensions about the emergence of mutants and conducted numerous tests on them for research purposes.

Following years of torment, a young mutant named Arcadia DeVille managed to break free, with assistance from Dragonblood. However, they were forced to flee when confronted by the armed forces of the foundation, known as The Sword. Upon reaching Kentucky, Arcadia and Dragonblood encountered the mutant hero Cannonball, who had taken a leave from the X-Men to visit his family. Despite Cannonball’s efforts to assist, he was ultimately overpowered.

Luckily, it’s X-Force, Cannonball’s old squad, who have shown up to assist with Sword. In the ensuing battle, Arcadia found herself uncertain about who was friend or foe and perceived X-Force as a threat. Consequently, she transformed Danielle Moonstar, an X-Force member, into a state of immobility. However, X-Force managed to overcome the sword, and Arcadia subsequently restored Moonstar to her original form. Additionally, Arcadia somehow modified Moonstar’s powers to allow her to control cosmic energies, similar to Arcadia herself.

Ulysses Dragonborn boasts an extraordinary physique granting him superhuman might, tenacity, and toughness, making him a formidable combatant. He possesses an accelerated healing factor, mending injuries at rates far beyond the average human. His unique talent is the Calming Touch, allowing Ulysses to induce tranquility in others by mere physical contact. Moreover, he holds an immunity against his brother Odysseus Indigo’s powers.

10. Odysseus Indigo

Odysseus Indigo was an individual who deviated from societal norms. He established the Damocles Foundation, a pioneering entity dedicated to guiding the future evolution of humanity. His focus was primarily on the emergence of mutants, and he conducted numerous investigations involving these individuals as subjects.

Indigo served as the representative of their organization on one of its multiple ventures, the Aguilar Institute. They contributed diverse resources to a quaint town called Almost Reno in New Mexico. The town’s citizens, who lived in a sterile environment, were unknowingly exposed to altered and anomalous chromosomes, resulting in all newborn children there gaining extraordinary powers.

Odysseus Indigo possesses an extraordinary body structure, granting him over-normal strength, stamina, and resilience. Moreover, he holds the unique Power Nullifier ability, which emanates from his person, disabling any superhuman powers so long as they are within the vicinity of his field and he maintains concentration.

9. Enigmo

Born among the enigmatic race of Deviants, Enigmo stood out from the crowd due to his human-like appearance, which allowed him to mingle with the rest of Lemuria rather than live in isolation like his kin. This unique trait led him to join the Unlimited Class Wrestling Federation, where he made a name for himself by defeating Anabolicus during one of their matches.

It was right after this victory that Kro, another Deviant, approached Enigmo with an offer. Kro had formed a new team called Delta Force, designed to enhance the lives of fellow Deviants. The team was just getting started, and Kro wanted Enigmo to be part of it.

He concurred, and Delta Force embarked on a mission to rescue the Avengers from Ghaur’s grasp. The Dark Knight was engaged in combat, but he was under the influence of a Brain Mine at the time, so the battle didn’t last long. However, the mine was bypassed prematurely, and the Black Knight reverted back to his normal self. Regrettably, they were compelled to retreat from Lemuria, leaving it in Ghaur’s power for fear of causing widespread chaos. Kro assured them that one day they would return to vanquish Ghaur once and for all.

Enigmo’s most recognized abilities involve controlling biological matter, allowing him to split his body into distinct sections which can independently transform and become separate entities capable of movement. Additionally, he has the ability to reabsorb these duplicates back into his original form.

8. Taras Vol

In approximately 18,000 BC, Taras Vol was an extraordinary scientist with unusual abilities, residing on the ancient island of Lemuria. He was not just a genius in genetics, but also possessed telepathic powers. This enigmatic figure decided to conduct experiments on three Neanderthals, whom he named Cole, Gort, and One-Eye.

He was attempting to find a method to extend the lifespan of unusual species. His research was planned to run for five years, but the outcome remained unknown because of the catastrophic event that submerged Lemuria and Atlantis, making it unclear whether he survived. In the aftermath, Neanderthals managed to survive throughout history thanks to their genetically-enhanced traits. As for his abilities, he was an exceptionally intelligent scientist with a keen understanding of genetics.

Similar to Ranar, there isn’t a great deal of information available on Taras Vol. This is essentially everything we currently know about him.

7. Dragona

Dragona goes by another name, Deviant, and is the sibling of Ereshkigal. Information about her is scant as she’s only made seven appearances since her introduction in 1979. Her significant narrative unfolds in Avengers issues #370-371, where she was a member of a Delta Force team dispatched to save the Avengers who were imprisoned by Ghaur. Furthermore, Dragona is recognized for her past relationship with Brother Tode.

Regarding her unique talents, she is famed for her capability to fly and unleash flames, a distinct skill of hers. Additionally, she possessed various powers typical of Deviants.

In terms of her special skills, she can fly and shoot fire, which sets her apart. Moreover, she held common abilities among Deviants.

6. Ransak the Reject

Ransak belongs to the race known as Deviants. He is the offspring of Maelstrom and Medula. With a human-like form, he stands out among his peers who were born with deformities. To the other Deviants, his appearance appears monstrous.

After being turned down, he transformed his fury into exceptional skills as a gladiator. In the colosseum, he caught the eye of Thena, an immortal being, and alongside his fellow gladiator Karkas, enjoyed protected status within Olympia’s city limits. However, his unrelenting anger concerned the immortals. Kingo Sunen took it upon himself to instill in him the values of self-discipline and control.

After the Eternals departed for space, Ransak returned to his former role as both gladiator and warrior in the arenas. In the City of the Eternals, Karkas and Ransak served as its protectors. They aided Thor in navigating his way to Lemuria city, where he sought to retrieve an artifact of immense destructive power that had been taken by Ereshkigal before him.

5. The Ritter Twins

Thousands of years ago, Thena and Kro, belonging to ancient rival factions of humanity, were unexpectedly in a relationship. During the Vietnam War, they had a secret encounter and Thena discovered she was pregnant. Using her unique abilities, she discreetly placed the embryos within a childless human woman, allowing the offspring to grow up unaware of their ancestry.

In this scenario, Dr. Daniel Damian, who knew about Deviants and Eternals, unleashed a once-monstrous being (previously known as Ajak) to eliminate two young children while also ending the lives of numerous sets of twins. Thena then transported these children to Olympia, the city of Eternals, without revealing their ancestry to them. However, even Olympia posed a threat, and the monster seized the children before escaping to Peru, where they confronted Damian. Eventually, the twins uncovered their true lineage and were rescued by Kro and Thena.

Since then, the Ritter Twins have made multiple appearances. In issues #370-371 of Avengers, they joined Delta Network and transformed into a two-mouthed, four-eyed, four-armed being named Tzabaoth. Later in Heroes for Hire #6, they merged once more, taking the form of a slender, winged metallic creature known as Dark Angel.

In each narrative, the twins encountered their initial meeting, a momentous occasion for both stories. Additionally, in both tales, Ghaur was reborn, implying that the authors might not have realized he had been utilized beforehand. Approaching his centennial, this character wields immense power that’s matched only by his unpredictable insanity. His father, Phaeder, was banished from Attilan (the city of the Inhumans) for ambitions to clone living beings. He ended up in a Deviant city where he wed a woman named Morga, who then gave birth to Maelstrom.

Maelstrom was thrown into the pit of slaves, but his mother perished instead. However, he was rescued by his father and they began to plan their retribution against the Deviants and Inhumans.

After being hurled into the pits meant for slaves, Maelstrom saw his mother fall victim instead. But his father saved him and devised a plot for vengeance against the Deviants and Inhumans.

Maelstrom possesses the ability to harness kinetic energy, enabling him to absorb any incoming attack and redirect it for his own benefits – enhancing his strength, emitting energy bursts, establishing protective force fields, and even altering his size. Moreover, he boasts an exceptional intellect in the fields of biology and genetics, showcasing impressive technical skills as well. Uniquely, Maelstrom’s genetic makeup grants her a significantly stronger physique compared to the average human.

He discovered how to amplify it even more by utilizing kinetic energy. Moreover, he possesses the ability to manipulate his own size, expanding or contracting to uncharted dimensions using mental control.

3. Ereshkigal

As a cinephile, I’d say: In the realm of cinema, there exists a captivating character, Sister of Dragona’s alter ego – Ereshkigal, a rogue archaeologist with an enigmatic past. She boasts of a life spanning over millennia and has cunningly usurped the identity of the Sumerian Goddess, concealing her true name from the world. Dispatched by Brother Tode to the City of Cosmic Deities, she transformed herself into a human form and embarked on an adventure towards the majestic Andes Cordillera. However, her journey took a dramatic turn when her aircraft was intercepted by Celestials. Aboard the same vessel were the immortals, Eternal Ajak and Thor, disguised as humans. They valiantly foiled the Celestials’ plans.

Following the Siege of Asgard, Ereshkigal departed from the war-torn city of Lemuria and ventured into the post-war ruins of Asgard, under the watchful eye of Thor. There, she successfully stole the Oshemar Stone from him – an artifact from another dimension, originally given to Odin by its maker. However, Ereshkigal couldn’t use the stone to control the Deviants, and it was eventually Kro who opened it, initiating a devastating chain of events. The destruction caused by this event was ultimately halted by Thor and Phastos.

Ereshkigal is an unusual character, characterized by her pale skin and fiery red eyes. With bat-like wings enabling her to fly at a moderate pace, her physical prowess exceeds that of a typical human male. Her age remains uncertain, yet she appears to have existed for nearly a thousand years, defying the expectations given her youthful appearance akin to a woman in her forties. Possessing the ability to transform into human form, Ereshkigal also boasts knowledge and technology native to Deviants. She has been observed wielding energy weapons or pistols that can create ice, and she possesses a belt capable of transporting across dimensions and teleportation.

2. Ghaur

Originally hailing from the city known as “Toad City” in the rogue nation of Lemuria, Ghaur was raised as a high-ranking priest within their deviant priesthood. Despite this position, he harbored greater aspirations. A power struggle ensued when Ranar asserted his claim to the dissident throne; in response, Ghaur orchestrated Ranar’s demise. Over time, Ghaur established himself as an influential figure among the Deviants, though his leadership was not officially recognized.

Ghaur clashed with Warlord Kro, who was given the title of monarch as a figurehead by Ghaur. After defeating both Kro and the Eternals Thena and Sersi, Ghaur shared with Kro that he had gathered an army made up of non-standard beings, which he controlled using floating holograms. To boost his powers, Ghaur used a vial containing some of the “spirit” from the “dreaming cosmos,” transforming himself into a celestial being. However, this new power came with a price as Ghaur was manipulated by the Celestial Dreamer, compelling him to set the dreamer free from his tomb.

In simpler terms, Ghaur’s spirit was detached from his divine form by a powerful entity called Uni-Mind. This separation caused Ghaur’s consciousness to disappear, while his celestial body seemed to vanish into nothingness. Later on, the Silver Surfer helped bring back Ghaur’s physical shape. His strongest abilities lie in manipulating genes and controlling minds. Additionally, Ghaur demonstrated leadership skills, magical abilities, and an exceptional memory – he knew the genetic makeup of all known deviants who were living or believed to have survived death.
