This article contains major spoilers from the Demon Slayer manga.
In the anime Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, it’s the fearsome sword-wielders and dreadful demons that usually grab the limelight. Yet, unobtrusively working behind the scenes is a figure whose impact on their world is undeniably significant.
scarcely seen on the battlefield, yet significantly impacting the destiny of the Demon Slayer Corps and its combatants, delve deeper into Kagaya Ubuyashiki’s role in the fight against Muzan and demons, uncovering his reasons behind these actions.
Kagaya Ubuyashiki’s origins and position in Demon Slayer
In the narrative, Kagaya Ubuyashiki is often called ‘Oyakata-sama’ or ‘master.’ He represents the 97th head of the Ubuyashiki family. His role includes taking over leadership from his family line, which has been entrusted with the Demon Slayer Corps for centuries. The responsibility of this ancient lineage is to wipe out demons and bring an end to Muzan’s tyranny.
In the Heian period, Kagaya’s family founded the Corps, with the objective of lifting a curse that originated from Muzan’s birth as the first demon. Despite being born into wealth, Kagaya’s life has been tainted by tragedy: many relatives passed away prematurely, and he took over at just four years old following his father’s suicide.
Demon Slayer: The Ubuyashiki family curse
Since the time Muzan transformed into a demon, a genetic affliction has affected Kagaya’s lineage, manifesting as a progressive illness that takes the lives of kin before they turn thirty. Regrettably, Kagaya himself is likewise impacted by this curse.
Over time, the sickness took a toll on him, causing his skin to wrinkle and turn pinkish-hued, while his eyes grew dark and clouded, making him practically blind and confined to bed. However, despite his dire circumstances, he managed to keep a tranquil smile on his face and radiated a kind, paternal aura that strengthened the courage of every warrior under his leadership.
Demon Slayer: Kagaya Ubuyashiki’s leadership and sacrifice
Although he couldn’t engage in combat, Kagaya commanded deep-rooted loyalty with his tranquil aura that pacified and united the most rebellious Hashira. He viewed each Demon Slayer as a child, recalling every member by name and paying respects at the graves of fallen warriors until his powers waned.
He possessed an extraordinary ability to perceive things beyond normal senses, enabling him to detect Muzan’s presence and gauge the power of fighters even without sight. During the final defense in the Ubuyashiki manor, Kagaya tricked Muzan into a trap by concealing his anger beneath a composed facade and then triggered a self-destruct mechanism.
This action might have claimed his life, yet it inflicted harm on the Demon King as well, granting a respite for his troops to ready themselves. Later, Kiriya ascended the throne, eventually disbanding the Slayer Corps once Muzan was defeated. He continued Kagaya’s tradition of inspiring hope and making sacrifices.
