This year, the Final Son of Krypton will make his spectacular comeback to the big screen in James Gunn’s Superman. However, his universe in the comic books is set for a major shake-up as well. For the first time in a while, DC Comics is introducing another monthly Superman series titled “Superman Unlimited“. This new ongoing series will be penned by Dan Slott, renowned for his work on Amazing Spider-Man, Fantastic Four, She-Hulk, and many others. Joining Slott is artist extraordinaire Rafael Albuquerque. Here’s the official synopsis from DC Comics:
To commence the Superman Unlimited series by DC in May, an enormous Kryptonite asteroid, capable of causing extinction-level destruction, rains down Superman’s vulnerability onto Earth. This rare mineral, Green K, becomes the most sought-after resource on the planet, triggering a global arms race. The increased abundance of Kryptonite in the DC Universe shifts the power dynamics among criminal organizations like Intergang, who, under new management, are growing more powerful with almost every foot soldier carrying Kryptonite bullets. The asteroid has left vast reserves of Kryptonite to be mined, and it harbors untold horrors yet to be discovered. To endure, Superman must establish new partnerships, develop innovative technology, and employ fresh strategies if he wishes to continue his mission for truth, justice, and a brighter future!
The esteemed newspaper of Metropolis, known as The Daily Planet, is preparing for a global expansion, fulfilling its name’s promise. This move is made possible through a merger with Galaxy Communications owned by Morgan Edge. The Daily Planet brand will transform into a multimedia news network, complete with a cable news channel, an extensive online platform, and a robust social media presence. Lois Lane remains the editor-in-chief, though her Superwoman status is yet to be confirmed. Familiar faces at The Daily Planet such as Jimmy Olsen, Ron Troupe, Cat Grant, and Steve Lombard will staff various branches across the DC universe. This expansion will create a truly international network. Overseeing all the new technology is Tee-Nah, an IT specialist from Gorilla City, who is King Solovar’s goddaughter. It remains to be seen if she’s the first gorilla to work at The Daily Planet, given the outlandish stories of DC’s Silver Age.
The increased quantity of Kryptonite on Earth alters the dynamics for the Super family significantly. As per DC editor Paul Kaminski, Superman will encounter obstacles unlike any he’s faced before. Essentially, visualize a scenario where Superman prevents a bank robbery, but every weapon is loaded with Kryptonite bullets and every common criminal carries a Kryptonite knife. Here’s what Superman Unlimited writer Dan Slott shared about his experience joining DC and specifically the Superman family:
