Cillian Murphy returned to the world of 28 Years Later for the London premiere of the new film, The Bone Temple. Despite heavy rain, Murphy and his co-stars, Emma Laird and Erin Kellyman, made a memorable appearance on the black carpet at BFI IMAX Waterloo. Murphy is not only the star of the film, but also one of its executive producers.
During his individual scenes, Murphy looked sleek in a grey suit and black turtleneck. Laird, playing Jimmima again, wore a flowing pale blue gown with a ruffled skirt, and Kellyman, as Jimmy Ink, chose a shimmering gold dress that fit the evening’s celebratory mood. Murphy’s appearance confirms previous news about his involvement in this second season of Danny Boyle’s show.

Murphy’s brief appearance in the current film is meant to pave the way for a bigger part in a potential third installment. He told The Observer that audiences should definitely see the second film, which he believes is excellent. That second film, The Bone Temple, picks up the story from 28 Years Later, focusing on young Spike (Alfie Williams) as he joins a dangerous group of acrobatic assassins led by the villainous Sir Jimmy Crystal (Jack O’Connell).

Set in a Britain still recovering from the devastating Rage Virus, the new film features the return of Ralph Fiennes as Dr. Ian Kelson. The premiere, despite the rainy weather, was a glamorous event with a host of celebrities in attendance. Andy Serkis was there with his son, Louis Ashbourne Serkis, who makes his acting debut in the movie. Both director Danny Boyle and the film’s new director, Nia DaCosta, were present, along with cast members like Mirren Mack and Jonathan Ross, accompanied by his wife, Jane Goldman.

The new film comes after some discussion about the previous one, especially the character Sir Jimmy Crystal. Some viewers pointed out similarities between him – his tracksuits, blonde wig, and the fact that all his followers were named Jimmy – and Jimmy Savile, a disgraced TV personality. Director Danny Boyle explained to Business Insider that the character was a playful take, loosely based on figures from popular culture and the way honors are given.
Directed by Nia DaCosta and written by Alex Garland, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple is a horror film set in a post-apocalyptic world. It’s the fourth movie in the 28 Days Later series and was filmed alongside 28 Years Later (2025). The cast includes returning actors Murphy, Laird, and Kellyman, as well as Ralph Fiennes, Jack O’Connell, Alfie Williams, and Chi Lewis-Parry. Sony Pictures Releasing released the film in the UK on January 13th, showing it as a double feature with the previous installment.
Cillian Murphy has a busy 2026 planned, starting with a return to horror and a reprise of his famous TV role in The Immortal Man: A Peaky Blinders Film. The movie, a World War II story with Barry Keoghan, Rebecca Ferguson, and Tim Roth, will be in theaters on March 6th and will later stream on Netflix. He’s also joining Michelle Williams and Daniel Craig in a new prison drama directed by Damien Chazelle.
