Netflix’s gripping psychological thriller “You” concluded (in a subtly dramatic manner) following its fifth season, which was marked by a multitude of bloodshed. Instead of seeking redemption, the character Joe Goldberg (portrayed by Penn Badgley), found retribution, largely orchestrated by Bronte (played by Madeline Brewer).
During an event at New York City’s Hotel Chelsea on April 29th, Brewer candidly discussed the emotional climax of the series and admitted that it left her shaken for several days. “It was a significant milestone, and it was truly thrilling to assist in wrapping up these five seasons of a show,” she shared with People magazine.
The actress noted that although it was extremely intense, every aspect of it, from minor scratches to our overall appearance, was carefully planned and executed like a dance routine. However, it was also deeply disturbing in many ways, she emphasized.
In the last season of the popular Netflix series, Brewer portrayed the character of Louise Flannery, a student hailing from Ohio with an affinity for English studies. Previously, Louise had collaborated with Teaching Assistant Guinivere Beck (played by Elizabeth Lail) at New York University. It was Beck who became one of Joe’s earliest victims and also served as his romantic interest during the initial season.
Louise embarks on an investigation to unmask the real culprit behind Beck’s suspected murder, as it appears he may have escaped punishment for her death. Driven by the pursuit of justice for Beck, she assumes the identity of Bronte and lands a position at Joe’s bookstore.
In the final episode, Bronte and Joe cross paths when she points a gun at him. This encounter takes place close to a holiday home, where they engage in a brutal altercation. Bronte fires a shot that doesn’t kill Joe, but instead lands him behind bars. The series concludes with Joe incarcerated for the heinous acts he carried out throughout the last five seasons.
Earlier, Badgley, aged 38, shared insights about the conclusion of ‘You’ and his farewell to the serial killer role. “He was a deep influence for me. He’s not a real person,” he stated, mentioning that he spent most of his life on the show and even welcomed a child while embodying the contentious character.
He’s developed an unusual connection with Joe, he explained, and it’s through this relationship that he’s learned crucial lessons about masculinity – by understanding what it isn’t as much as what it is.
Season 5 of You is now streaming on Netflix.
