You don’t need an Oblivion Remaster, you need Boblivion, the mod that makes Oblivion Bob

Get ready, everyone! The day we’ve all been eagerly waiting for has finally arrived – it’s time for the highly anticipated and frustratingly elusive remaster of The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion, which has been the subject of so many leaks and rumors that fans were on the verge of going mad with anticipation!

Despite what others might think, I do care about the release of the Oblivion Remaster. In fact, I was even live-blogging about it yesterday. However, I shouldn’t be too invested because I don’t necessarily need the Oblivion Remaster. What I yearn for is something else entirely – Boblivion. It’s a concept that is challenging to express in words, yet it stirs up intense, almost indescribable feelings within me.

Created by imaginative artist assman3000, Boblivion is a modification for the original Oblivion game that “alters nearly everything in the base game to ‘Bob’, almost everything, that is, with the exception of about 1%.” While I find assman’s storytelling slightly unnerving under no external influence, I must admit I am still astonished and entertained by their dedication. Indeed, it transforms almost everything into Bob. Main menu options? All Bob. Pause menu items? You guessed it – Bob. Bar items? A Bob-filled landscape awaits you. From every cheesewheel to every sword, every misfired arrow: it’s all Bob as far as the eye can see.

The humor in Boblivion is a kind of wit that I appreciate despite its absurdity. What truly captivates me about it is its unwavering dedication to the concept, pushing boundaries that could potentially disrupt the game’s mechanics significantly. Our creator has gone deep into the Oblivion Creation Kit and renamed every race in the game, each now called Bob. This alteration disrupts dialogue since all characters are now referred to as Bob. However, you can still communicate telepathically with them, and they will only respond with ‘Bob’. This is fitting for a project that aims to transform the game in such an over-the-top manner.

This seemingly insignificant jest might appear trivial, yet it has captured my imagination more than one might expect. Here’s some additional perspective: I’m captivated by it. The reason isn’t that I find it uproariously funny, but rather because it represents the peculiar, perplexing, self-referential evolution that arises when an individual dedicates nearly two decades to refining a game—from its very foundations.

The plant has been growing in the same pot for too long, becoming a unique and somewhat peculiar yet fascinating specimen. This is something I am eager to watch grow amidst this fresh, shiny Oblivion. In other words, it’s a development that not only excites me but also ensures that the original Oblivion remains relevant even with its enhanced counterpart making an appearance.
