Yasha Finally Arrives on THE MIGHTY NEIN Series

Yasha Nydoorin, the powerful and mysterious barbarian played by Ashley Johnson, hasn’t had much screen time in the animated series The Mighty Nein so far. Due to other work commitments, Ashley Johnson wasn’t always available during the original Critical Role Campaign 2. Now, the animated series has the chance to revisit and slightly alter the events of that campaign, and Yasha’s story is already unfolding differently. Let’s take a look at what happened with Yasha in episode six of The Mighty Nein, titled “Many Gifts.”

Yasha is still trailing behind the rest of the group after they leave Zadash, but she’s gaining on them quickly, and a confrontation seems inevitable. This episode marks her first significant appearance in The Mighty Nein, and it introduces her as a fearsome figure known as “The Orphanmaker”—a reputation signaled by the vultures that follow her. She immediately attacks an outpost of the Dwendalian Empire, swiftly defeating everyone inside, including even the horses. The only person she pauses before killing is a young woman who pleads for her life.

While watching a scene in The Mighty Nein episode six, Yasha experiences a vivid memory. She sees a woman with red hair standing in a field of blue flowers, and feels a strong sense of love and happiness. However, a dark voice interrupts, reminding Yasha of her desire to forget these feelings and urging her to follow its commands. This triggers a glowing mark on Yasha’s neck. For a moment, she seems hesitant to harm the woman, but then demands information about mages and the Cerberus Assembly. After the woman points towards Zadash, Yasha brutally kills her. It appears the mark is forcing Yasha to commit violent acts.

Yasha’s backstory is hinted at throughout the sixth episode of The Mighty Nein. We see glimpses of her beloved, Zuala, suggesting a heartbreaking romance. The episode also implies that Yasha isn’t fully in control of her own mind, and is likely being manipulated. Interestingly, the animated series reveals this mind-control element much earlier in the story than it was presented in Critical Role Campaign 2, altering the pacing of Yasha’s narrative.

Around the middle of the story, in episode 69 titled “The King’s Cage,” Yasha goes through a storyline where she’s under mind control. It will be fascinating to see how the characters of The Mighty Nein weave elements of this arc into events that happened earlier. We also get to see a lot more of Yasha fighting in full barbarian mode. The story will show how Yasha and Mollymauk Tealeaf become friends, starting from the beginning, instead of implying they’ve known each other for a long time.

It’s not surprising that the animated series, The Mighty Nein, is making changes to the original stories, and Yasha’s storyline seems to be getting the biggest makeover. However, we’ve really enjoyed what we’ve seen so far and are excited to see how the story unfolds.

You can now watch The Mighty Nein on Prime Video! New episodes come out every Wednesday, and we’re excited to see what challenges and adventures await!
