Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is hinting at what viewers can anticipate from the upcoming Marvel series, Wonder Man, and says it’s a departure from previous projects. In an interview with Empire magazine, Abdul-Mateen described the show as new, witty, and aware of its own nature, but also focused on compelling characters and their stories.
The show centers around Simon Williams, an actor playing Wonder Man in a new movie—and who also secretly has superpowers. It’s a clever take on Hollywood, celebrity culture, and the world of superheroes, something Marvel hasn’t fully explored since the series She-Hulk.

A Different Kind of Marvel Show
According to Abdul-Mateen, the upcoming Wonder Man series feels distinct from other Marvel projects, including both their TV shows and films. It’s being made as part of the Marvel Spotlight initiative, which focuses on telling self-contained stories centered around individual characters.
Though the series touches on the idea of people getting tired of superhero stories and what they expect from them, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II explained that these aren’t the main points. He described these themes as simply background elements, stating the show is primarily about an actor’s personal growth and the power of friendship.
Familiar Faces and New Energy
Joining forces with Joivan Wade is Sir Ben Kingsley, returning as his Marvel character Trevor Slattery. Their chemistry is expected to be the heart of the show, providing both emotional depth and comedic moments with a clever look at the entertainment world.
As a big Marvel fan, I’m really intrigued by what I’m hearing about Wonder Man. It sounds like the movie is going to be self-aware and playful with the whole superhero genre – kind of winking at the audience – but without ever fully pulling you out of the story. Yahya Abdul-Mateen has said we can expect it to playfully tease the superhero ‘machine’ while still giving us that big, exciting spectacle we all love from Marvel.
Release Details
The new Marvel series, Wonder Man, will debut on Disney+ on January 27, 2026, at 6 PM Pacific Time. It will have eight episodes, each lasting about 30 minutes. Destin Daniel Cretton directed the show, which is expected to be a unique and thoughtful addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
