Y2K Trailer: Rachel Zegler Faces Off Against Homicidal Technology And THIS 90s Toy In Kyle Mooney’s Apocalyptic Horror Comedy

As a child of the ’90s, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia when it comes to Y2K. The trailer alone has me reminiscing about Tamagotchis, VHS players, and those iconic pink toy cars that were a staple in every kid’s room back then. But the twist! Oh, the twist! The idea of homicidal machines turning a New Year’s Eve party into a murder scene is both terrifying and hilarious, a perfect blend of genres if you ask me.

Rachel Zegler stars alongside Kyle Mooney in his offbeat apocalyptic horror-comedy titled Y2K, which also features Jaeden Martell and Julian Dennison. The film’s synopsis suggests that it revolves around two unsuspecting high school juniors who stumble upon a New Year’s Eve party, only to discover the horrific technological slaughter that lies ahead.

At the gathering, things rapidly spiral out of control and transform into a gruesome crime scene as lethal robots – even a Tamagotchi – bore holes into a girl’s skull, while a VHS player showers attendees with flying tapes. The classic 90s pink toy car makes an appearance in the preview, igniting someone using a lighter and spray paint. Now, our main characters find themselves thrust into a struggle for survival amidst the ensuing pandemonium.

In this movie, Kyle Mooney, a former Saturday Night Live cast member, makes his directorial debut. He collaborated on the script with Evan Winter, and Jonah Hill, an actor-comedian, serves as producer. The trailer initially presents itself as a coming-of-age comedy featuring a boy pursuing affection from a girl amidst the festivities of an exclusive party.

Yet, as the clock chimes midnight, the festivity transforms into a macabre playground, where humor and horror coexist in an unusual yet captivating manner. Mooney opted for a genre mix that’s challenging, but also innovative and unlike anything we’ve encountered before!

As an ardent admirer, let me share that I’m thrilled to learn that The Kid Laroi, Fred Durst, Lachlan Watson, Daniel Zolghadri, Eduardo Franco, Mason Gooding, Lauren Balone, Tim Heidecker, and Alicia Silverstone are all part of the Y2K cast. This movie has been garnering fantastic reviews, not just for its unique blend of genres, but also for its heartfelt tribute to the nostalgic past—A seedy local DVD store, a handcrafted CD mixtape, the iconic Abercrombie fashion, white kids attempting freestyle rap, and much more.

In addition, Mooney played a character who worked at a video store, depicting the typical stoned individual, peppering his speech with incomplete sentences and frequent exclamations such as “Yo!” and “What’s up?”. The movie aims to present an original concept through a vibrant cast of promising young actors!

Y2K will premiere in theaters on December 6.
