XCOM meets The Thing in Critical Shift, a newly revealed turn-based tactics title

Independent studio Rhinotales Studio has revealed their upcoming turn-based tactical RPG titled “Critical Shift“. This game blends the spine-tingling narratives found in supernatural horror tales such as Resident Evil and The Thing, with the demanding combat akin to XCOM.

Players will lead their team to an icy research station after receiving a distress signal, aiming to figure out what transpired there and prevent any potential hazards. The plot of Critical Shift originates from the creative mind of Guiltythree, author of the acclaimed web novel Shadow Slave. The tale promises to plunge players into a whirlwind of deadly peril, intense drama, deceit, and much more.

Structuring the story around a strong foundation of tactical, turn-based gameplay: Each member of your squad boasts unique abilities and skills, but relying on these alone won’t ensure a safe return home. Players must venture out to discover and gather resources, as their supplies will gradually diminish in the challenges within the station.

In contrast to XCOM, the combat system of Critical Shift does not rely on Random Number Generators, meaning players can avoid frustration from seemingly unlucky misses even when a shot appears to have a very high probability of hitting.

In this game, you’ll encounter role-playing game (RPG) elements. For instance, you’ll find yourself navigating the intricate politics of the station, where diverse factions have established bases. These factions range from a mad AI fixated on producing hybrid organisms to a mysterious collective that alters people into grotesque marionettes. These groups control different parts of the station and are often at odds with each other. By understanding and manipulating these conflicts, you can gain an edge.

In the coming year of 2025, Critical Shift promises to provide gamers with a playtime ranging from 30 to 45 hours, set for launch on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S platforms.
