Initially, Bethesda’s space game, Starfield, was pulled from release on PlayStation 5 due to Microsoft acquiring the publisher. But, as of late, remarks by Xbox chief Phil Spencer indicate there’s a possibility that Starfield could eventually be playable on Sony’s console.
During an interview with Destin Legarie, the topic of Starfield‘s exclusivity came up. When asked if it would remain exclusive to Xbox, Spencer simply replied, “No.” He explained that there’s no need to limit any game to a single platform, suggesting that games should be available on all platforms where they can potentially reach players and achieve commercial success.
Spencer stressed that the Xbox’s game distribution strategy focuses on making games accessible across various platforms. He mentioned that they don’t follow an approach of limiting games to specific platforms, because such a method conflicts with their overall business plan.
This new approach seems to differ significantly from previous ones. Earlier, Microsoft implied that games such as Starfield and Indiana Jones: The Great Circle wouldn’t be coming to the PS5. But the latest news about Indiana Jones being playable on PlayStation hints at a possible change in their strategic direction.
Experts have pointed out that Microsoft’s Xbox Series X|S consoles have been experiencing a drop in sales figures within the U.S., lagging behind even the less successful Xbox One by 18%. Furthermore, despite substantial financial backing for game developers and publishers, the Game Pass service has fallen short of its aim to amass 100 million subscribers.

It seems like Microsoft might be changing their strategy due to these difficulties. Instead of self-publishing games, they plan to work with external publishers and make their games accessible across various platforms. This move is intended to expand their user base and boost earnings.
This news holds great potential for PlayStation users. The idea that they might experience games such as Starfield without the need for an Xbox console is truly enticing. Moreover, it suggests a broader, more inviting gaming landscape, where once-exclusive titles can be enjoyed by a larger community of gamers.
Essentially, although it was unclear if Starfield would reach the PlayStation 5 following Microsoft’s purchase of Bethesda, recent comments from Phil Spencer hint at a shift in approach. As Xbox adaptively expands its strategy to offer games across multiple platforms, there’s a possibility that Starfield and other games could become playable on the PlayStation 5 down the line.
