Xbox Teases ‘Project Helix’ Next-Gen Console to Play PC Games

As a longtime gamer, I was honestly starting to think Xbox hardware was a goner! Between Phil Spencer stepping down and Microsoft saying they’d put their games on other consoles last year, it felt like the end of an era. But wow, I was wrong! The new head of Microsoft Gaming, Asha Sharma (who used to lead their AI work, which is pretty cool), just announced they’re building a brand new console. Apparently, it’s designed to let you play games on both Xbox and PC – they’re calling it Project Helix, and I’m seriously excited to see what it’s all about. (I got the news from IGN.)

Sharma announced the start of his leadership with a tweet. He clarified that ‘Project Helix’ is just a placeholder name, and the actual new Xbox will likely be called Xbox followed by a number or letter. Importantly, Sharma’s announcement signaled that Microsoft still plans to continue making hardware, despite what many people thought.

I was so excited to kick off my day with the Xbox team! They shared some incredible news about their dedication to the future of Xbox, and even gave us a first look at what they’re calling ‘Project Helix’ – that’s the codename for their next-generation console. It’s really promising to see what they’re working on!

Project Helix is designed to deliver top-notch performance for your Xbox and PC games. I’m excited to discuss it further with our partners and developers at GDC next week!

The Game Developers Conference, or GDC, kicks off on Monday, March 9th, in San Francisco.

The most important thing to note is Microsoft’s renewed push with Xbox in the years ahead. Sony had firmly established itself as the leader in the console market with both the PlayStation 4 and 5, and Nintendo consistently performs well, as seen with the Switch and its successor. However, Xbox One, and particularly the Series X and S, didn’t sell as well as Sony’s consoles, leading many to believe Xbox was no longer a major competitor. But according to Sharma, that may not be the case.

We kicked off the day with the Xbox team, discussing our dedication to the future of Xbox, including Project Helix – the internal name for our next-generation console. Project Helix is designed to deliver top-tier performance and play games from both Xbox and PC. We’ll be sharing more details soon…

Whether Project Helix actually delivers better performance is something for the tech experts to figure out. But if it allows Xbox consoles to play PC games, that would definitely make it stand out from the competition, at least for now. We’ll find out more at the Game Developers Conference next week.
