Previously in charge of the “X-Men ’97” series, Beau DeMayo expresses that he currently lacks confidence in Marvel Studios’ forthcoming “Mutant Saga,” attributing this to questionable planning, selfish choices, and a perceived disregard for the X-Men’s rich heritage.
Through extended tweets, DeMayo outlined his skepticism towards Marvel Cinematic Universe’s handling of the X-Men, citing overlooked chances, dubious character debuts, and reused characters from the Fox era as key concerns.
After the Secret Wars, Feige’s version of the X-Men, known as the “new age of mutants,” comes into play. Characters from Fox Marvel’s X-Men series will also reappear in the film titled “Avengers: Doomsday“.
“Not Yet, No”
DeMayo is frequently questioned by fans if he thinks Marvel Studios is capable of producing an authentic X-Men re-launch.
“Now, do I have faith in the MCU’s Mutant Saga? Short answer: Not yet, no.”
He pointed out that creating captivating X-Men tales demands a substantial amount of meticulous preparation, strategic release, and adherence to the established lore – an aspect he feels has been missing in Kevin Feige’s guidance.
It’s equally important for you to set aside your personal pride, adapt to their unique conditions, and approach them with empathy. This means understanding their established lore and taking into account the passion of the fans.”
“To truly connect with these unusual characters, try not to let your ego get in the way, understand their rules, and respect what they stand for because fans care deeply about it.
Criticizing the MCU’s Mutant Teases
DeMayo took aim at how the MCU has introduced mutants so far:
Ms. Marvel Retcon:
The initial appearance of the X-Men in the Marvel Cinematic Universe was shaped as a young adult reinterpretation, which some viewers perceived as Kevin’s personal take on the franchise. This adaptation was seen as controversial and ego-driven by certain fans, who believed that introducing Jubilee instead could have been a better choice.
One way to rephrase this in natural and easy-to-read language could be:
The introduction of Ms. Marvel as a mutant through a retcon and musical cue in the series is an unexpected twist, marking the first appearance of the X-Men within the MCU. However, instead of introducing one of the many established mutants, it appears this was more of a young adult (YA) rewrite imposed by Kevin, aimed at personalizing the franchise and giving it a fresh spin. To date, this subtle hint has not been fully explored or developed in the series.
For decades, X-Men enthusiasts have eagerly anticipated seeing characters like Jubilee and Kitty Pryde receive their well-deserved recognition in films. However, much like Fox forced a teenage version of retconned Rogue upon us, Kevin Feige and Marvel seem to be pushing Wolverine’s son, Daken (Khan), down our throats instead. This feels like a slap in the face for fans, and from my personal experience working with them, it’s clearly all about ego. It would have been more appealing if the newly cast Jubilee had appeared at the end of Ms. Marvel to recruit her, rather than the forgettable tag we ended up with.
Doctor Strange 2 Cameo:
In my perspective as a film critic, reimagining the beloved animated character of Professor X from the X-Men series, only to abruptly end his life in such a violent manner, can be described as an unusual blend of nostalgia and innovation that DeMayo referred to as “weird nostalgia.” This choice of storytelling certainly stirs up some intriguing discussions among fans.
In a surprising and nostalgic appearance, Professor X made a cameo in Doctor Strange 2, employing the distinctive theme from the animated series. When Kevin saw this, he thought it was an innovative and intriguing idea to depict the respected leader, activist, and pillar of the X-Men’s ideology suffering a gruesome death…once more.
The Marvels Post-Credit Scene:
In an unlikely encounter, Monica Rambeau found herself face to face with a character from what many consider the least impressive X-Men film, a meeting that left her unimpressed and reminiscent of the high standards set by the early Avengers films.
As a die-hard cinema enthusiast, I can’t help but express my surprise at finding myself in an unusual situation – encountering Beast, a character from what many would argue is the least impressive X-Men movie ever produced. The intriguing twist being that Monica Rambeau and Beast share no prior history or irony to their meeting, much like Nick Fury’s introduction to Tony Stark in Phase 1 which laid the groundwork for the epic Avengers saga. In contrast, the encounter between Beast and Monica appears more like a desperate attempt to spark interest rather than a compelling narrative tease, akin to Phase 1’s tantalizing tags that left audiences eagerly anticipating the formation of the Avengers.
Instead, I propose an alternative ending that would truly capture the essence of those iconic Phase 1 tags – Monica or Carol Danvers waking up to find themselves face-to-face with Anna Paquin’s Rogue. Now that, my friends, would ignite the same excitement and anticipation for what’s to come in the MCU!
Deadpool & Wolverine Reliance:
Reprising Fox’s Wolverine and Deadpool “to tell a fan-pandering story of Reddit wishlists.”
The repeated stories featuring Wolverine and Deadpool from the Fox film franchise, which were separate from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) under Kevin Feige’s supervision, delivered a fan-pleasing narrative that appeared to bid adieu to the Fox universe for a third time. Interestingly, the MCU seems to have followed a similar pattern in their portrayal of Wolverine as the prominent X-Men character, which could be perceived as a reliance on familiar faces, albeit not without its own originality.
Adamantium Plot in Captain America 4:
Calling it a “contrived MacGuffin” that raises timeline questions.
In the reimagined Captain America narrative, “Brave New World,” an artificial adamantium plotline was introduced, which unfortunately didn’t contribute much substance, raising intriguing chronology queries. It seems that in this alternate universe, Ms. Marvel might have been a mutant before Wolverine underwent the Weapon X program, contrary to the original timeline.
Recycling Old Fox Characters:
Bringing back characters “we thought were gone” as “artificial interest.”
To put it simply, it seems that some beloved Fox characters who we believed had met their end are being resurrected repeatedly. This is allegedly done to generate artificial excitement and divert attention from Kevin and Marvel Studios’ ongoing struggles with frequent setbacks.
Intriguingly, Kevin is simultaneously launching new ideas such as adamantium and mutant Ms Marvel while rehashing old Fox characters. To add to the confusion, he announces plans for a complete reboot at the same time? Frankly, it’s quite baffling!
“No Room for Ego”
DeMayo claimed that Feige and his group, referred to as the “Parliament,” were attempting to sabotage the success of X-Men ’97, as audiences viewed it as a blueprint for rectifying issues within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Someone shared with me that Kevin felt frustrated about my project and the series, not just because of the fans, but because they seemed to be critiquing Kevin’s work within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) as a whole.
He mentioned that Marvel, in some instances, discouraged crew members from acknowledging his leadership skills and interrupted an IGN interview as they were giving him excessive praise.
Everything here revolves around personal pride, but the X-Men don’t tolerate such selfishness. Instead, they prioritize their history and the commitment we all have invested in it. Making a name for oneself comes second to preserving and upholding the X-Men’s legacy.
“My Mind Can Be Changed”
Though facing criticism, DeMayo openly welcomes the opportunity to be disproven – a situation he finds acceptable if it’s backed by a genuine narrative, rather than just public relations.
Instead of relying on public relations gimmicks, celebrity endorsements, or leveraging nostalgia to sell a story, let’s focus on having genuine discussions about the original comic books, their themes, and narratives. Let’s ensure we treat these stories with the respect they deserve.
Instead of focusing on characters and themes as seen during Marvel’s initial Hall H panels, he currently notices a shift in approach.
The focus isn’t on the genuine heroes, characters, or plot; instead, it seems like Kevin and his group have become more about stardom rather than their roles.
According to Beau DeMayo, Kevin Feige had some resentment towards the X-Men ’97 series, and it’s noted that the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) producers tend not to delve into comic book reading.
Kevin’s comments imply a concern about the quality of work, suggesting it doesn’t meet the standard for depicting X-Men characters with proper care, respect, and thoughtfulness. Moreover, he questions the competence of the studio responsible, stating that this isn’t what one would expect from an organization not causing alarm.
Kevin expresses doubts about the quality of the work, as it seems to lack the necessary attention, respect, and careful thought required for portraying X-Men characters appropriately. He also questions whether this work demonstrates effective leadership from a studio that should not be perceived as incompetent or concerning.
