In a fresh perspective, Emerald Fennell is reimagining the timeless gothic tale “Wuthering Heights”! This film, based on Emily Bronte’s namesake novel, primarily explores the illicit and sorrowful love story between Heathcliff and Catherine Earnshaw.
In the upcoming production, Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi will portray the main characters, while Charlotte Mellington and Owen Cooper will take on the roles of the younger Catherine and Heathcliff.
Ahead of his Netflix debut in the limited series Adolescence, Cooper is already causing a stir. His portrayal of the troubled young anti-hero, based on one of literature’s most famous characters, will only strengthen his standing in the entertainment world.
Previously, young Cathy was played by Mellington, who had some acting background under her belt. Notably, she recently appeared as Lavender in the successful West End run of Matilda the Musical. The classic yet sorrowful gothic tale revolves around Catherine, a teenager, whose passionate relationship with Heathcliff escalates into a tumultuous romance that ultimately ends in heartbreak.
In simple terms, this passionate and stormy love tale unfolds amidst the breathtaking Yorkshire moorlands, delving into the complex and ruinous bond shared by characters Heathcliff and Catherine Earnshaw, as per the formal summary.
Besides Cooper and Mellington, it’s also confirmed that Vy Nguyen will take on the role of the younger Nelly Dean in the movie. This character is the main storyteller from the original novel. Warner Bros. has secured the rights to this feature, with Barbie actress Margot Robbie involved as a co-producer through her company LuckyChap.
In this upcoming project, Hong Chau is slated to portray an older version of the character Nelly Dean. Meanwhile, Shazad Latif and Alison Oliver are set to play Edgar Linton and Isabella Linton respectively. Notably, this venture signifies a reunion between Fennell and Oliver since they last collaborated on Saltburn.
2026 will see the debut of a new Wuthering Heights movie, which will be Cooper’s first major film role. Interestingly, he landed this opportunity after submitting his initial audition tape, which caught the eye of the director known for Promising Young Woman, as reported by Variety.
