World War Z Comeback Hinted by Skydance – Paramount

Paramount’s new owners at Skydance may be looking to bring back World War Z.

At a recent media gathering, executives from Skydance casually mentioned the 2013 Brad Pitt zombie smash-hit in a conversation about our upcoming projects – alongside heavyweights like Star Trek and Transformers. (I’m just a cinema enthusiast, but it sounds pretty exciting, doesn’t it?)

History of World War Z

2013 saw the release of the film adaptation of Max Brooks’ 2006 novel, World War Z. Directed by Marc Forster, this movie featured Brad Pitt as UN investigator Gerry Lane, who was given the mission to halt a worldwide zombie epidemic. In spite of some production difficulties and additional filming, the picture turned out to be profitable for Paramount, earning more than $540 million globally on an estimated budget of $190 million.

Sequel Plans That Never Happened

After securing a successful box office showing, Paramount has disclosed intentions for a follow-up movie, featuring Brad Pitt’s reprisal of his role. Over time, this venture changed hands frequently, particularly with David Fincher in discussions about directing it. However, recurring setbacks related to scheduling and financial concerns prevented its progress. In 2019, Paramount ultimately decided to postpone the production of the film due to escalating production expenses.

Skydance’s New Direction

With Skydance now owning Paramount, Ellison’s reference to “World War Z” implies that the project is once again being considered for development.

As a fervent fan, I’m thrilled to share that according to recent reports, Josh Greenstein, one of the co-film chiefs, has mentioned “Star Trek” and “Transformers” as key franchises for priority development. The studio is aiming to release an impressive 15 films annually, with potential plans to increase this number to a staggering 20 in the future!

Ellison, too, expressed curiosity towards the horror genre – a field where Paramount has recently thrived with films like “A Quiet Place” and “Smile” – hence, rekindling the tale of “World War Z” seems fitting.

As a die-hard movie fan, I can’t help but feel a surge of excitement! Should this comeback materialize, it would undoubtedly bring the long-awaited sequel that fans have craved for over a decade.
