‘Work Together As A Family’: Melissa Joan Hart Reveals How She Handles Son’s Battle With Eczema

As a devoted fan who has followed Melissa Joan Hart‘s journey since her Sabrina days, I must say that her recent advocacy for eczema awareness and support touches my heart. Having three boys of my own, I can only imagine the struggles she faced in figuring out what was wrong with one of her sons’ skin.

In a recent conversation, Melissa Joan Hart opened up about a common issue families may recognize – eczema. She and her spouse, Mark Wilkerson, experienced difficulty diagnosing their son’s skin problem for some time. With the help of their family physician, they eventually discovered it was eczema, a persistent skin disorder that is frequently misconstrued. Hart’s goal now is to educate others about this condition and provide assistance to those facing similar challenges.

At first, Melissa Joan Hart wasn’t entirely certain about her son’s skin issue. She later shared in an exclusive interview with People that it took them some time to determine the exact skin condition affecting one of her sons. “We had trouble pinpointing exactly what it was,” explained the 48-year-old actress, adding that as a parent, distinguishing between poison ivy and a rash can be difficult.

Sabrina the Teenage Witch’s cast member mentioned that they recently went to see their family doctor, who diagnosed a condition as eczema. She shares this information with us as she is a mother of three – Mason, 18, Braydon, 16 and Tucker, 11 – all of whom are married to singer-songwriter Mark Wilkerson.

A persistent condition known as eczema leads to skin that is dry, itchy, and inflamed, as per the Mayo Clinic. The intensity of flare-ups can vary, ranging from simply dry and cracked skin to rashes or even oozing. To provide knowledge and support for individuals dealing with eczema and other skin ailments, Hart teamed up with AbbVie to organize the Science of Skin discussion on August 8.

The ex-Nickelodeon star expresses her hope that her experience will help those who may feel isolated, saying, “I believe it will offer some clarity.” According to People magazine, she observes her friends concealing psoriasis and eczema, and her siblings also struggle with this skin condition. She notes the common practice of trying to hide these issues, especially when it comes to chronic skin diseases, expressing that there is often a sense of shame associated with them.

As a caregiver, she emphasizes the importance of teamwork, collaborating closely with your family, dermatologist, and healthcare provider to create a tailored plan. By effectively managing symptoms, you’ll have greater control over the situation. She further highlights that staying proactive, meaning getting ahead of it, is crucial for our family’s wellbeing.

For her son, who has eczema, the hardest periods are dry spells and winter, so she always ensures to care for it before bedtime. She emphasizes that a proper treatment plan is crucial to prevent his eczema from becoming chronic. “We’re dedicated to shield our loved ones in every possible way.”
