Jimmy Fallon is bringing the popular online word game Wordle to television. NBC is currently filming a pilot episode of the game show, which will be hosted by Savannah Guthrie and is being produced in the UK.
Jimmy Fallon is producing a TV adaptation of the game through his company, Electric Hot Dog, in partnership with Universal Television Alternative Studio and The New York Times, as reported by Deadline.
The Times held the rights to the game and decided to adapt it for television. To do this, they collaborated with Fallon and UTAS.
Wordle, a popular word game, was created by Josh Wardle, a software engineer from Wales. It became incredibly successful, and The New York Times acquired it in 2022. The game is easy to play – you have six attempts to guess a five-letter word, and it’s surprisingly addictive!
With each attempt, the game provides hints using colored tiles to reveal correct letters and their positions. It became incredibly popular last year, with 5.3 billion games played – a significant increase from 4.8 billion the previous year.
Fallon loves Wordle! He’s even joked about being addicted to it and famously played the game on his show, *The Tonight Show*.
If the show is greenlit, Wordle will become the latest TV project for Jimmy Fallon at NBC. He recently debuted the business competition show *On Brand*, and also produces the popular games *Password* and *That’s My Jam* for the network.
The Wordle TV show is currently in development, and if NBC approves it, viewers might soon be able to watch people compete at solving the popular word game on television instead of just on their phones.
