Woody Harrelson Says “No Way” to TRUE DETECTIVE Reunion

Woody Harrelson has dashed hopes of a True Detective reunion, stating firmly that he won’t be returning to the show. Rumors about a possible comeback had been circulating online, but Harrelson has made it clear it’s not going to happen.

The first season of the acclaimed crime drama centers on detectives Rust Cohle, played by Matthew McConaughey, and Martin Hart, played by Woody Harrelson, as they investigate a disturbing serial killer with ties to the occult. Many fans of the original 2014 series were excited by the possibility of a revival. While McConaughey has expressed interest in reprising his role as the complex Louisiana detective, Harrelson doesn’t feel the same way. In an interview on NBC’s Today, Harrelson explained that bringing Cohle and Hart back together could damage the show’s strong reputation.

During an interview on Today, co-host Dylan Dreyer asked Woody Harrelson if he and Matthew McConaughey would ever revisit their roles in True Detective. Harrelson explained that McConaughey is open to returning, but only if they both feel the story idea is strong enough, saying it ‘wouldn’t even be a choice’ if they were satisfied with the concept. Dreyer then asked Harrelson directly if he would participate in another season.

Harrelson described Matthew as hilarious, but said a second season of the show wouldn’t be a good idea. He felt the first season ended perfectly and worried another season would ruin what they’d already achieved.

Back in May, the creator of the show, Nic Pizzolatto, mentioned on the Nothing Left Unsaid podcast that he had considered continuing the story from season one. He envisioned bringing back the main characters, detectives Cohle and Hart, but only if the actors were interested. Sadly, it now seems unlikely we’ll see them team up on screen again.

Good news for fans: HBO is making a fifth season of True Detective. While specifics are still unknown, many believe Nicolas Cage will be the main star. Filming is scheduled to begin in 2026, with the new season expected to air in 2027.
