As an ardent fan of Giancarlo Esposito, I find his life story absolutely captivating and heart-wrenching at the same time. The fact that he contemplated arranging his own murder due to financial struggles before landing the iconic role of Gus Fring in Breaking Bad is a testament to his resilience and determination. It’s incredible to think about what could have been if that show hadn’t happened, as it not only changed his life but also introduced us to one of the most memorable characters on television.
It’s fortunate that Breaking Bad, created by Vince Gilligan, came about. Prior to landing the role of Gus Fring, Giancarlo Esposito was financially strapped to the point where he planned his own death as a means of financial support for his family. The actor’s financial hardships were almost unbearable, and he seriously contemplated staging his own murder to collect insurance money.
The actor who recently debuted in Marvel’s Captain America: Brave New World as Seth Voelker (aka Sidewinder) appeared on an episode of SiriusXM’s Jim & Sam during the promotional tour for his AMC drama Parish. In this conversation, he revealed that a year prior to securing the role on Breaking Bad around 2008, he had contemplated orchestrating his own death.
“In my thoughts, I wondered aloud, ‘If someone takes their own life, do they still receive life insurance benefits? Are there death benefits involved?’ My wife found these questions peculiar,” explained Esposito, adding that he began contemplating strategies at this point.
Speaking openly, Esposito confessed that if someone were to accidentally cause his death, the insurance payout would go to his four children: Kale Lyn, Shayne Lyra, Ruby, and Syrlucia Esposito, whom he shares with his former wife Joy McManigal.
As a devoted parent, I found myself raising four wonderful children. My heart yearned for them to experience life to the fullest, and yet, financial instability became an arduous challenge – a difficult period in my existence. At times, thoughts of self-sacrifice crossed my mind, hoping that by doing so, they could continue their journey through life. This is the depth of despair I encountered at that time.
Initially, Esposito felt a hint of an escape route, but he soon understood it wouldn’t work due to the distress it would cause his children. He explained that this decision would inflict lifelong pain and potentially prolong existing generational trauma, which he was trying to leave behind. Fortunately, the AMC series “Breaking Bad” emerged as a beacon of hope for him.
In 2008, Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul starred in a show titled “Breaking Bad,” which quickly gained an immense fanbase. As the storyline progressed, creator Vince Gilligan sought a formidable antagonist within this world who could strike terror into all. Michael Mando made 26 appearances on the series, and later had the opportunity to reprise his role in the prequel show “Better Call Saul,” which spans 34 episodes and delves into the life of Bob Odenkirk’s character, Saul Goodman—a lawyer frequently consulted by Walter White.
Regarding his return to the Breaking Bad universe, it’s interesting to note that following a single guest appearance on the show, they approached him again for another role. “I was asked to sign a contract, but I declined,” Esposito explained. “However, being given this opportunity made me feel strong and in control.”
The actor clarified his refusal by saying, “I declined because it was the finale of the third season and they asked me to sign a six-month contract. However, they offered an increased payment, which they referred to as a ‘holding fee.’ This would have meant asking them for permission for other projects like Disney, and I was concerned they might say no or their intentions were unclear.”
After starring in Breaking Bad, Esposito’s acting career took off rapidly, landing him among the most demanded actors of late. He accumulated an impressive list of roles such as Disney’s The Mandalorian, the popular Prime Video series The Boys, Guy Ritchie’s Netflix action comedy The Gentleman, and even ventured into horror films like Abigail and MaXXXine.
