The trailer reveals Ben Kingsley will play a significant role alongside the lead, reprising his character Trevor Slattery from Iron Man 3 and Shang-Chi. It looks like Trevor and the main character both try out for a part in a new Wonder Man movie, bringing their stories together. This won’t be an origin story for the lead character, as he already has superpowers – including super strength, energy-based abilities, and potentially super speed. The trailer gives us glimpses of the red and purple energy often associated with the Wonder Man character in the comics, appearing around his hands and briefly in his eyes.
With Simon Williams, also known as Wonder Man, already displaying powers in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, fans are wondering if he’s a mutant. His comic book backstory is quite different: he was a businessman who lost his company to Tony Stark and gained powers through experiments as part of a revenge plot against the Avengers. He later became a hero and eventually died, only to be resurrected and become a Hollywood actor and stuntman. The MCU seems to be streamlining his story, focusing only on the actor aspect. However, if Simon is a mutant, it could be a subtle clue that the X-Men are coming to the MCU. We’ll get definitive answers when Wonder Man premieres on Disney+ on January 27th.
