The finale of Wonder Man caught many viewers off guard. Simon Williams achieved his lifelong dream, going from a struggling actor plagued by self-doubt to playing his childhood hero. However, this success came with a significant sacrifice that forced him to re-evaluate his priorities. He essentially revealed himself as a superhero by helping Trevor Slattery escape from prison, and the two of them flew off into the unknown as the show ended. Interestingly, this wasn’t the original plan. According to creators Destin Daniel Cretton and Andrew Guest, there was a different ending considered for the series.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the creators discussed Simon’s major sacrifice and expressed hope for the characters’ return in a potential second season. While many Marvel shows, particularly those featuring less popular characters, aren’t renewed, the finale definitely leaves the door open for further development of the relationship between Simon and Trevor.
Regarding a different possible ending for Wonder Man, Guest explained that they had considered a scene where the characters performed together in a small theater and floated in the air. However, the core of the story was always about two self-absorbed individuals, Simon and Trevor, learning to prioritize someone else for once. Both characters needed this growth, and the filmmakers hoped it would be satisfying to see them change and support each other out of genuine love.
According to Cretton, the story was always destined to end on an emotional note for these two characters. He explains that Trevor’s departure was simply a setup for him to express himself through the play. I think that ending worked really well as a romantic comedy, and I agree with Cretton. Both Trevor and Simon grew as people, learning to be more open and less self-centered – and honestly, that’s a good thing for any story.
