As a child of the early 2000s, I vividly remember the magic that Wizards of Waverly Place brought into our lives. So, stepping into the shoes of a lifestyle expert and reminiscing about my own childhood, I must say, I am utterly thrilled to see this beloved series making a comeback with a fresh twist!
In the early 2000s, Wizards of Waverly Place was a beloved Disney show that provided comfort for children everywhere. Former cast members Selena Gomez and David Henrie have revisited the magical world with a modern take. The spin-off series finds returning star David Henrie’s character Justin Russo in a similar position to his father, played by David DeLuise, in the original sitcom.
In this tale, it centers on the eldest member of the Russo clan who chose to depart from the mystical realm and settle into a human life with his family. Interestingly, Selena Gomez, known for her hit song “The Same Old Love”, returns to portray Alex Russo once more in the opening episode, this time as Justin’s lively aunt, casting spells over his children.
She introduces him to Billie (Janice LeAnn Brown) a wizard-in-training, who needs mentorship. Now Justin must keep his commitment while keeping the Russo family’s wizarding history undisclosed from his family.
The young, well-known actor and recurring performer, who’s also an executive producer alongside Gomez, shared their aspirations for the series. As quoted in The Hollywood Reporter, Henrie expressed, “It holds significance because the fans have been incredibly important to Selena and me over the years.
He mentioned that his goal was to reintroduce this series, not only as a warm reminder for the loyal fans of nostalgia but also to share the same values with a fresh audience who may not have experienced the original program.
He also shared his enthusiasm for introducing the program to a fresh group of viewers, and Brown’s selection was made with that objective in mind. Henrie pointed out that the young actor was popular in 2010 when the original series ended, so “it’s an exhilarating period to attract a completely new fanbase.
When queried about Brown’s feelings towards working on the show, she expressed it as a “privilege,” given her affection for the Wizard of Waverly Place film, stating that “the movie was my favorite. Being involved in something I cherished deeply feels incredibly strange, almost like receiving a wonderful gift.
At the moment, you can stream the initial nine episodes of “Wizards Beyond Waverly Place” on Disney+. As for the remaining twelve episodes from season one, their release date has not been revealed yet.
