Rapper Wiz Khalifa, whose legal name is Thomaz Cameron Jibril, has received a nine-month prison sentence in Romania. He was convicted for smoking marijuana while performing at the Beach, Please! festival in Costinesti last year, as reported by the BBC.
A court in Constanța reversed a previous fine of 3,600 Romanian lei (approximately £619 or $829) that was issued for drug possession. Instead, the court decided Khalifa should be jailed, stating that simply paying a fine would suggest illegal behavior is acceptable and could lead to more young people using drugs.
The judges called the incident a blatant display of inappropriate behavior, explaining that Khalifa performed while using cannabis in front of a young crowd and openly consumed some of it on stage.
Romanian authorities said he had over 18 grams of cannabis and smoked some during the show.
Khalifa, a ten-time Grammy nominee, was convicted in court while not present. Since then, he’s continued to perform in the U.S., recently appearing on stage with Gunna in California and sharing moments with fans on Twitch and social media. Following an incident at a festival, he posted on X (formerly Twitter): “The authorities were actually very respectful and let me leave. I plan to return soon, but I’ll leave the large marijuana cigarette at home next time.”
After a concert in July 2024, police questioned the individual, and he was subsequently charged with possessing drugs for personal use. According to Vlad Zaha, a criminologist from Romania, it’s very unlikely he will be extradited back to Romania, as he told the BBC.
According to Zaha, it’s very improbable that Wiz Khalifa will be extradited to Romania to serve time in Constanța, considering his financial resources and influence, Romania’s limited ability to negotiate extraditions, and the legal situation regarding cannabis in the United States.
I’ve always been a fan of Wiz Khalifa – his songs like ‘Black and Yellow,’ ‘See You Again,’ and ‘Young, Wild & Free’ are classics! It’s no secret he enjoys cannabis, and he even started his own brand back in 2016. It’s interesting, though, because even though it’s legal in a lot of states now, it’s still technically against federal law.
It’s unusual for a foreign court to punish an American musician for using drugs while performing, but legal analysts don’t expect Wiz Khalifa to actually go to jail in Romania.
