Winona Ryder Describes Her Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Comeback As “A Dream Come True”

As a lifestyle expert with a deep appreciation for cinematic history and the evolution of iconic characters, I am thrilled to witness Winona Ryder‘s return to the big screen in “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.” Having grown up watching her portray the unforgettable Lydia Deetz in the 1988 original, it is heartwarming to see her reprise this role after three decades.

Winona Ryder is poised to return to the big screen with the upcoming film titled “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice“. At a press event during the Venice International Film Festival, Ryder expressed her feelings about revisiting her character Lydia Deetz from the original “Beetlejuice” movie, which was 36 years ago. This marks her return to the role after such a long time.

Reflecting on the occasion, I must say, stepping onto the film set once more after all these years felt like a dream realized for me. Remarkably, the ambiance and vitality on this sequel’s set echoed strikingly with what I experienced in 1988 – a sentiment that has left me feeling right at home.

The actress expressed her delight at being reunited with everyone, stating that returning to the experience was like a cherished dream fulfilled. Her affection and faith in Tim are profound, and there was an undercurrent of playful eagerness and willingness to explore new things.

She also mentioned, “You have such a sense of security, yet complete freedom too. It’s a feeling I deeply value, reminiscent of the initial one, and I’m glad to be surrounded by it once more.”

She ends by expressing that working on the project was truly a unique and memorable part of her life’s journey.

What Is The Movie About?

In 1988, Tim Burton directed the Academy Award-winning film “Beetlejuice,” which blends horror and comedy. The story revolves around Lydia, a creative and melancholic teen, who along with her family, shifts into a house inhabited by the spirits of a deceased couple. Determined to stay in the house, these ghosts enlist the help of Beetlejuice, an unconventional bio-exorcist, to frighten the new occupants away.

In the upcoming film titled Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, directed once more by Tim Burton, we find Winona Ryder reprising her role as Lydia Deetz. The story unfolds when Lydia, now married with a daughter and family, visits the haunted house following her father’s passing, Charles Deetz (portrayed by Jeffrey Jones). Trouble ensues when their rebellious daughter, Astrid (Jenna Ortega), inadvertently opens a gateway to the afterlife, summoning Beetlejuice.

During an interview with The Times in 2023, Burton clarified that while the forthcoming film isn’t a traditional sequel, it does share connections with its predecessor.

“The story is essentially catching up with these characters, particularly focusing on Lydia due to her appeal. It’s similar to the 35-Up series, exploring what their lives are like 35 years later. We wonder about their families, their life choices, and where they stand now. As we age, such questions become increasingly relevant. This narrative, in turn, gives the story a unique identity of its own.”

In this updated rendition, Winona Ryder, Michael Keaton, and Catherine O’Hara will once again take on their iconic roles, with Tim Burton returning as director, much like he did in the initial film. The ensemble will be expanded by fresh faces such as Jenna Ortega, Monica Bellucci, Willem Dafoe, Justin Theroux, and Danny DeVito.

The film titled “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” made its grand debut at the 81st Venice International Film Festival, and it will hit cinemas globally within the next week. During its premiere at the event, the movie earned a prolonged 3-minute standing ovation from the appreciative audience members.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice will be released in theatres worldwide on September 6, 2024.
