William Shatner, best known as Captain Kirk from Star Trek, recently shared that he broke his shoulder in a horse-riding accident last year. The 94-year-old actor discussed the incident while accepting an award for the Star Trek series at the Saturn Awards in California on March 8th.
Shatner explained that he was practicing a fast stop with his horse – something he’s enjoyed for years – when the animal unexpectedly moved, throwing him off. He jokingly admitted he’s “not a young stuntman anymore” and that he tumbled, landing hard on his shoulder and fracturing it. He’s been recovering since the fall.
Even though he’s getting older, the actor handled the news with his usual good humor and openness. He shared that he was having a unique shoulder surgery on March 11th, playfully calling it a “reverse something or other.” He jokingly tried to explain the procedure, saying it involved “putting the ball in the socket and the socket in the thing,” and that hopefully, after ten hours, he’d be pain-free. He described it as his goal for the near future.
This health scare comes after a similar incident in September 2025, when the actor had a brief hospital stay related to his blood sugar levels. He quickly reassured fans then, jokingly quoting Mark Twain to say reports of his illness were overblown.
Despite his age, Shatner has remained very active, continuing to work on films and other projects. He even made history in 2021 by becoming the oldest person to travel to space, though that record has since been broken by Ed Dwight.
William Shatner continues to be a popular figure in Hollywood, often appearing at fan conventions and award shows to celebrate his career. While best known for playing Captain James T. Kirk, he’s also received praise for his work on the TV series Boston Legal and for voicing characters in many animated films.
Recently, fans enjoyed the documentary You Can Call Me Bill, which provides a thoughtful look at his life and career. The Saturn Awards were a big event, with other prominent figures like James Cameron and Tom Cruise in attendance.
Cameron’s film Avatar: Fire and Ash, released in December 2025, was a huge success, earning him several awards. Tom Cruise also received a standing ovation when accepting his Best Actor award for Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning.
