Robert Eggers is once more partnering with Willem Dafoe for an upcoming film titled “Werwulf“, scheduled to hit North American theaters on Christmas Day 2026. Reports suggest that Dafoe is in discussions to star alongside Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Lily-Rose Depp. Eggers will be at the helm as director, with his frequent collaborator Sjón contributing to the script, having previously worked together on “The Northman“.
The movie is being made by Focus Features, along with Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner from Working Title, and Chris and Eleanor Columbus from Maiden Voyage as producers. This film, largely a mystery, seems to suggest a grim werewolf narrative based on its title. Set in 13th-century England, it is rumored that the dialogue will be in Old English to match the period.
It’s anticipated that Aaron Taylor-Johnson will take on the role of the werewolf, while Lily-Rose Depp might portray his wife. The plot is rumored to incorporate aspects of witchcraft and is believed to be one of Eggers’ most violent films yet. Filming is scheduled to start in September.
Dafoe has previously teamed up with Eggers in various film projects such as “The Lighthouse,” “The Northman,” and “Nosferatu.” Furthermore, they are considering a joint venture to remake “A Christmas Carol” for Warner Bros., where it is speculated that Dafoe may assume the role of Scrooge.
As a passionate cinephile, I’ve been thoroughly enjoying Daniel Day-Lewis’s recent projects. Most recently, he graced our screens with his captivating performance in the A24 film titled “The Legend of Ochi.” Currently, he’s immersing himself in the filming process for “Tenzing” under Apple Original Films. Additionally, I can hardly wait to see him in two more upcoming productions: “The Man in the Basement” and “The Birthday Party.
Initially, Robert Eggers gained notice with his first movie, “The Witch“, which played a significant role in propelling Anya Taylor-Joy into stardom. He’s recognized for creating films that are both dark and moody, often set in historical periods. Besides “Werwulf“, Eggers is also engaged in producing a follow-up to the 1986 fantasy film “Labyrinth” and a fresh interpretation of “A Christmas Carol“.
Recently, Aaron Taylor-Johnson graced the screen in “28 Years Later” and portrayed Friedrich Harding in Eggers’ “Nosferatu”. He’s also recognized for his roles in films such as “Kick-Ass”, “Avengers: Age of Ultron”, and the upcoming “Bullet Train”. On the other hand, Lily-Rose Depp embodied Ellen Hutter in “Nosferatu” and has been seen in “The Idol” and “Voyagers”.
As a fervent admirer, I can’t help but express my anticipation for the captivating narrative that is Werwulf. This innovative portrayal of werewolf horror, infused with a historical perspective, promises a thrilling experience. For those who have been enthralled by Eggers’ works, this dark new tale is sure to ignite excitement as it unfolds.
